Decembre 2014

ANNOUNCEMENT - The Board of Directors, in the course of reviewing our operations and mindful of the membership dues and activities of other chapters of L'Alliance Francaise, recently voted unanimously to increase our annual dues for the first time in our 31 years of existence.  This will be effective January 1, 2015, at the new rates of $40 Single, $50 Family, $15 Student and $100 Patron.  If you have not recently renewed or wish to join, you may do so by December 31, 2014 at the former rate. By doing so you will help maintain the quality Programs we provide to the Central Valley.  Your tax-deductible dues and other contributions sustain us and are very much appreciated.  Merci mille fois!

Annual Beaujolais Nouveau Dinner

Thank you for coming to our annual Beaujolais Nouveau dinner! The event was sold out and our host Patrick Bourrel, at the Boulangerie, had the wonderful idea to ask Chef Sharon Alexander to prepare a fabulous Boeuf Bourguignon dinner, which he concluded with a scrumptious pear desert. Norman Stokle and many enthusiastic performers entertained us all throughout the evening, with many lovely songs, a play, and many Beaujolais-fueled sing-alongs. See you all next year as we will, once again, look to celebrate this fun and tasty annual tradition with you!

Fresno Filmworks Present

"Bird People" the surrealist drama from French filmmaker Pascale Ferran: Friday, Dec. 12, 2014 * 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. * Tower Theatre
In French, English, and Japanese, with English subtitles
From France * 128 minutes * Not Rated

FROM THE CRITICS: A.O. Scott of The New York Times says: "There are plot twists, and then there is what Ms. Ferran does here, which is to transform - impetuously, improbably, and altogether marvelously - this somber, realistic tale into something else entirely. I don't want to say exactly what, and I'm not sure I can."

Nobel Prize winner Jean Tirole

2014 has been a good year for French intellectuals, with two Nobel prizes awarded a few weeks ago: Patrick Modiano in literature and Jean Tirole in economics. Here is Jean Tirole's bio from the European Corporate Governance Institute:

Jean Tirole is scientific director of the Institut d'Economie Industrielle, University of Social Sciences, Toulouse. He is also affiliated with CERAS, Paris and MIT, where he holds a visiting position. Before moving to Toulouse in 1991, he was professor of economics at MIT. In 1998, he was president of the Econometric Society, whose executive committee he has served on since 1993. He is president-elect of the European Economic Association. Read more...

What's better than taking a French class, getting
a friend to take one, too, and both of you
winning fabulous prize baskets?

Our next semester of French classes will start in January.  The new year is a perfect time to start learning the beautiful French language, or to renew the love of studying French. We have come up with a fun new incentive to take a class this coming January: a raffle, and here is how it works. When an Alliance member refers a new student to one of our language classes and the student signs up for a class, the names of both the Alliance member and the new language student will be entered into the raffle. Both members of the winning duo will each win a basket filled with a generous amount of office supplies, the perfect aid to successful study.  More information on available classes will soon be posted on the website.

Refer a friend to a language class, and bonne chance!
