Hello, everyone!

We don't normally do this, but today we're taking a detour from our normal programming and focusing entirely on cider. Not only is this the ideal season for it, but as one of the only bridges between the beer and wine worlds, it's not often explored fully enough.

Also, I happen to think that cider is frequently misunderstood, as most folks' exposure to it has been to the sugary, extract-based, adjunct-heavy stuff that's readily available on the shelves. So these features might serve as in introduction to the "real-stuff." If all of this reading makes you thirsty, I'll be hosting a cider tasting on Wednesday, October 15th from 5:30-7:30!

farnumFarnum Hill Ciders
Lebanon, NH
Here at Bauer, we've had a longstanding relationship with one of our favorite cider producers in New England. Farnum Hill/ Poverty Lane Orchards from New Hampshire was one of the first stateside operations to produce cider the way it had been made here long before Prohibition: from fresh-pressed local apples, in small batches, with in-house yeast, fermented completely through. What results is dry, tangy, earthy, and just fruity enough to appeal to most everyone. Their offerings range from the flagship Farmhouse Cider ($11.99/750mL) to the completely unique single varietal still Kingston Black cider ($19.99/750mL.)

PereLe Pere Jules Cidre/Poire
Apple and pear ciders from Normandy
This French cidery (yeah, that's the actual name for a place that makes cider - we all just have to deal with it) is based in Calvados, the home of the world-famous apple brandy of the same name. So these folks know them some pomme. And poire (pear cider isn't referred to as cidre poire, just pomme.) Either way, these are about as far from what you'll find on the shelves in six-packs as you could imagine. Super-dry, tart, and funkyyyy! If you're a sour beer fan at all, you owe it to yourself to try these out with some ripe cheese and maybe some roasted root vegetables. Preferably on a bench, watching the leaves change.  Le Pere Jules Cidres, $12.99/750mL on both.

basqueSidreria Bereziartua
Cider from the Basque region of Spain

Nestled in the Pyrenees between Spain and France, the Basque region is not necessarily the first place you'd think of as a cider hotspot. Nevertheless, these folks make a cider that's comparable to the ones featured above, a fact belied by their strangely glossy marketing. Bereziartua Sidra, $11.99/750mL.
