SUS Urban Farms: Gardens of Hope
The Fourth Annual SUS Harvest Luncheon, attended by individuals served by SUS, staff, community partners and volunteers, celebrated the season's successful harvest of organic produce at SUS residences throughout New York City. In partnership with Candle Cafe, SUS presented a farm-to-table menu featuring selections made from produce harvested by SUS urban farmers. SUS' Urban Farms, ranked one of the coolest in New York City, is open to all people served by SUS who are interested in agriculture as an employment pursuit or casual hobby. At the event, SUS urban farmer April explained the impact urban farming has had on her health and wellness, work ethic, sense of purpose and overall quality of life. Read More  |  View Photos
SUS' Brooklyn Crisis Respite Center, which offers temporary residential care for up to two weeks, now accepts referrals for adults of any age experiencing a crisis related to their serious mental illness. The program, launched by DOHMH as part of Parachute NYC, a new citywide pilot, provides options for people experiencing emotional and mental health concerns. Previously, the Respite Center focused exclusively on young adults. We are excited by this opportunity to expand the number of people to whom we can offer our innovative alternative to traditional emergency room and inpatient care.  Read More
As we celebrate National Recovery Month in September, the Wellness Works team is applying out-of-the-box approaches to recovery. In its 25th year, Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover. On par with this year's theme, Join the Voices of Recovery: Speak Up, Reach Out, SUS Wellness Works' "Happiness Groups" encourageparticipants to define their personal vision of happiness with an optimistic outlook, discuss their strengths, competencies and accomplishments, and brainstorm ways to apply them to daily life. Reports show that 22 veterans commit suicide every day. SUS is raising awareness of the suicide epidemic during Suicide Prevention Month this September so that more people support our veterans in need. To curb the veteran suicide rate, SUS is launching Operation Constant Courage (OP:CC) in October. The community-based program will enlist a trained network of veteran peers to volunteer as on-call first responders to rapidly intervene during crises when veterans are at risk of suicide. With first responders available across the region, support to veterans at risk of suicide will be easily accessible at the grassroots level. Read More

SUS gathered a small group of young professionals to galvanize support, raise awareness and promote membership of our Young Leaders Council (YLC). Co-Presidents Victoria Colyer and Peter Lattanzio spoke about what SUS means to them and why they chose to be involved. On a rooftop in the Upper West Side overlooking Manhattan, the event offered an opportunity for these young professionals to build relationships to leverage philanthropic efforts on behalf of the YLC.
