Becoming 2014 The Commons Blog
November 2014

Earlier this month we held an art opening featuring the paintings and photographs of Harley alumna, Edith Braggiotti-Painting '10 in the Gallery.
Watch a Youtube show of Edith's artwork.
Edith is a graduate from the art program at Drew University and recently moved back to the Rochester area. When asked about Harley's influence she said, "Harley was one of the contributing factors in my decision to pursue Studio Art. The close-knit community of Harley and the valuable guidance that the teachers offered formed an environment where I was able to explore my creativity. The art teachers, such as Lyn Parsons, always encouraged me to produce my best work, which helped me communicate my own artistic voice."

2014 Sands-Stern Award Winners
Scott Frame '73 and Kathy Kearns Frame '73
The Sands-Stern Award was created in the Fall of 2009 to recognize an individual or family whom has demonstrated their extraordinary commitment to The Harley School through contribution of their service and passion. This year's recipients are Scott Frame '73 and Kathy Kearns Frame '73. Scott and Kathy have remained involved with the School well beyond their graduation. Kathy was on Harley's Board of Trustees and even served as the President. Scott is currently a member of the Board. Not only did they attend
Harley, but two of their children, Caitlin '05 and Connor '08, did as well. In fact, they come from a long lineage of families involved at Harley: Frame, Hargrave, Kearns, and Sykes. They are the next generation of this group recognized for their commitment and support of the School.

Head of School Ward Ghory shared a funny story about Scott and Kathy when he presented the award. While he was interviewing for his position, he spent a lot of time in the Alumni Conference Room. Along the wall of the room are all of the class graduation photos. When Scott and Kathy came in to take part in the interview process, they immediately went to the Class of 1973 photo. Ward remarked that although the girls were in the front row and the boys in the back, Scott was, "as close to Kathy as he could be" in the photo, standing right behind her. Things have not changed much!

Previous Sands-Stern Award winners:

Robert Sands '76, Richard Sands '69, Andy Stern and Melissa McGrain P '99, '13 (2009), Arunas and Pamela Chesonis P '10, '11, '16 (2010), Joe '48 and Nancy Briggs (2011), Phyllis Bentley '45 (2012), and Peter Willsea '72 and Deb Schaller Willsea '73 (2013).

Harley Writers
Trish Vanable, Harley librarian, proudly displays Jim's donation to the library
Jim Davidson '64 recently donated two of his books to The Harley School Library: After the Fact: The Art of Historical Detection and Experiencing History: Interpreting America's Past

Jim is currently working on a new book about the history of the United States.

Fun Fact: Harley Upper School History teacher, Sandy Foster, uses one of Jim's books in one of his history courses.

Jerold Hamza '81 was recently awarded the Robert Traver Fly-Fishing Writing Award. His story, Prose to Poetry, or Dance to the Music, was featured in the Autumn 2014 Fly Rod and Reel Magazine. Jerold's first book is coming out in the Fall of 2015.

Dr. Jennifer Rubenstein '92, assistant professor of politics at the University of Virginia, wrote Between Samaritans and States: The Political Ethics of Humanitarian INGO's. The book is an "account of the political ethics of large-scale, Western-based humanitarian INGOs, such as Oxfam, CARE, and Doctors Without Borders."

The book will be available on Amazon starting in March of 2015. Read more about the book.

Alumni Visitors

Lisa Osborne Lange '74 and Vee-Vee Angle '74
Vee-Vee was in town visiting her mother and she stopped by to see Lisa and have a delicious Harley lunch.

Ashley Sankowski '14, Robert Moon '14 and Meghan Mendelson '14 were all home on college break this fall.

Ann Parsons '71 is a frequent visitor to The Harley School. She says she is "surprised and amused by the irony that her life has come full circle and she is back at Harley working with a student through her work at the Board of Cooperative Educational Services."
