10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Coffee and registration 9:30 am -10:00 am

Program 10:00 am -12:00 pm

Scandals in the nonprofit sector make people worry that charitable donations will not be put to good use, and tarnish the image of the entire
nonprofit community.   More than ever, nonprofits must operate with
integrity and must instill confidence in clients, funders, volunteers,
watchdog groups and others.  The issue of public trust in nonprofit
organizations is crucial for our survival and sustainability.
This seminar will discuss best practices in the areas of transparency,
accountability and ethics, and how we can best operate our
nonprofits in a trustworthy way
.

Topics will include:

Applicable state and federal rules that promote accountability,

including disclosure and reporting obligations

Organizational policies, such as conflict of interests and

whistleblower policies, that foster accountability

The role of the board

Other recommended practices to foster an environment of integrity

Nonprofit oversight and watch-dog agencies

The Logbooks: Connecticut's Slave Ships and Human Memory
Sunday, February 22
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Author Event with Anne Farrow

In 1757, a sailing ship owned by an affluent Connecticut merchant sailed from New London to the tiny island of Bence in Sierra Leone, West Africa, to take on fresh water and slaves. On board was the owner's son, on a training voyage

to learn the trade. The Logbooks explores that voyage, and two others

documented by that young man, to unearth new realities of Connecticut's

slave trade and question how we could have forgotten this part of our past so

completely.

About the author:

A journalist in New England for 30 years, much of that time at the Hartford Courant,

Farrow was a lead writer on The Courant's prize-winning investigations into

slavery in Connecticut, and the co-author of the book Complicity: How the

North Promoted, Prolonged, and Profited from Slavery, published by

Ballantine Books in 2005.

This program is free and no registration is required.
