CELEBRATING OVER 30 YEARS AND STILL GROWING
Chesapeake | Richmond | Roanoke

  Q 2015 | Issue 3
Now that hurricane season is over, it's time to prepare for the colder weather and inevitable storms that can leave you, your home, and your business without power. Below is a list of winter weather preparedness tips to help you, your family, and your business stay safe during the cold winter months.
  • Is your standby generator ready for the cold?  One way to ensure that your unit is ready is to have a routine preventative maintenance plan in place to ensure that your unit will run properly and effectively when it's needed most.
  • Do you have a backup battery for your generator?  It's always a good idea to have a backup battery on hand for those 'just in case' moments.
  • Make sure you have enough water and non-perishable food items to last at least 72 hours after the storm hits.

What are the different fuel options & benefits for your standby generator?

Gaseous Fuel - Clean Burning:
In the past, gaseous fuels had been avoided in industrial backup power applications based upon cost, effectiveness, power density, and perceptions of durability and fuel reliability.  That is no longer the case.

  • Cost effective engines: automotive style engines are more readily available in high volumes, making them more cost-effective components to source than similarly sized diesel engines.
  • Long running times: a key benefit to natural gas fuel is long running times.  Natural gas is supplied by a utility so refueling isn't an issue.
  • Environmentally friendly: natural gas-fueled engines emit fewer nitrogen oxides and particulate matter than comparable diesel-fueled engines, and they avoid the fuel containment, spillage, and environmental concerns with storing diesel fuel.

Diesel Fuel-The Traditional Choice:
Diesel-fueled generators are an efficient choice for high kW applications, as well as for facilities where code requirements call for on-site fuel storage, like hospitals & 911 call centers.  They can also provide backup power in remote areas that do not have access to a natural gas infrastructure.
  • Vertical Integration: Major components are designed & manufactured ensuring the highest reliability standards.
  • Easy to service: The engines that drive your diesel fueled standby generators can be serviced by any qualified diesel technician.
  • Readily available replacement parts: Because Generac uses diesel engines that are readily available in the market, replacement parts are easy and cost effective to come by.

Bi-Fuel Generators-The Two For One Approach:
Generac Bi-Fuel generators start on diesel fuel and add natural gas as load is applied, until the unit runs primarily on natural gas. They are fully integrated solutions, meaning every fuel train component, sensor, and actuator on the engine is specifically designed, engineered, and factory tested to work together.
  • Lower total cost of ownership
  • Code compliance
  • Reduced exhaust emissions
  • Scalability as part of a Modular Power System
