STAFF
FEATURED EVENT: Happiness is Now
Bringing HAPPY back

In an assembly more like a rockin' concert, speaker (and former high school math teacher) Danny Batimana and his Happiness is Now dance crew used story, dance and music to inspire students and staff at Century High School last Friday, March 20. He urged the audience to create positive energy, find their passion, take risks, seek unity through community, and redefine success to achieve happiness. Paraphrasing Confucius, Batimana told the audience: "Love what you do and you'll never have to work a day in your life." The crew's tour also included a multi-league workshop at Century on Thursday attended by leadership students from all HSD high schools and Aloha, McMinnville and Southridge high schools.

At the Board work session on Tuesday, March 17, Assistant Superintendent Steve Larson shared a presentation on our 2013-14 student achievement data and released the 2013-14 Student Achievement Report, which features seven achievement categories and multiple data points.  The Board has selected seven of those data points to follow closely: third-grade reading, fifth-grade reading, eighth-grade math, credits earned in ninth grade, four-year graduation rate, number of students receiving advanced diplomas, and the performance of our English Language Learners. 2015-16 SCHOOL CALENDAR

At their regular session meeting on Tuesday, March 17, Hillsboro School Board members unanimously approved the version of the 2015-16 calendar that has school starting on Tuesday, September 8. Besides the start date, other notable changes to the 2015-16 calendar are the placement of fall conferences in mid-November (last year, they took place during Thanksgiving week), and the shift of high school graduations to the second week in June. PROMISE OF OREGON CAMPAIGN

The Oregon School Boards Association, a member services organization based in Salem, founded "The Promise of Oregon" campaign to focus attention on Oregon students' accomplishments and the need to adequately fund public education.

The Promise campaign is based on two defining principles: (1) today's students are Oregon's greatest natural resource; and (2) we as Oregonians must invest in our public schools so the next generation can reach its potential. Visit the Promise of Oregon website to find out how you can help to keep "The Promise of Oregon."
