CORRECTION ANNOUNCEMENT:

U.S. Study Abroad Students to Germany Increase by Almost 2% in 2012/13

According to the latest Open Doors findings for 2012-13 released by the Institute of International Education (IIE), 9,544 students from the U.S. chose Germany as their study abroad destination in that year. This number represents a 1.9% increase in comparison to the year before. Germany's overall ranking among study abroad destinations for U.S. students has remained unchanged from the previous year: occupying 6th place. The choice of Germany for U.S. students studying abroad continues to grow, with a 71% increase in the number of U.S. students going to Germany in the past ten years.

The growth is in accord with the overall trend concerning the number of U.S. students who studied abroad for academic credit. This number rose to 289,408 in 2012-13, signaling a 2% increase from the year before.

"This steady increase reflects Germany's long-standing commitment to high-quality study and research," commented Dr. Nina Lemmens, Director, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), New York. "The development of dynamic, flexible and innovative study programs that attract and support international students, scholars and researchers in all disciplines, including a greater number of short-term an d non-degree programs have strongly supported this trend alongside the marketing activities of German universities, DAAD and its partners."

The new data in Open Doors also revealed a robust increase in the number of students from Germany enrolled at U.S. universities and institutions of higher education. According to the latest data, the number of German students at U.S. institutions of higher education is 10,160. This figure represents an 8% increase from the previous year. The U.S. is currently the fifth most popular study abroad destination for German students, following Austria, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.
