Agri-Business Consultants, INC.
Potato Scouting and Field Research Assistant in Montcalm County

The jobs will begin in June 2015. Positions end in late August to mid or late September, but could continue into the fall doing soil sampling.  Internship credits may be offered through some colleges and universities.  Specific intern responsibilities and learning objectives are set on an individual basis.

Qualifications: We prefer people with training and a career interest in entomology, plant pathology, weed science, agronomy, horticulture or integrated pest management.  However, people looking for a job that have more general backgrounds and interests in biology, the outdoors and natural resources management have been good employees for us. Applicants must like to work outdoors and be mature enough to work independently. Our scouts generally walk 5-10 miles per day through potato fields, so they must be physically fit.  Written and verbal communication skills, attention to paperwork details and organizational abilities are important to successful completion of this job.  Reliable transportation is required (mileage reimbursed from first to last stop each day). Consideration will be given to people likely to be available for employment next year, since we have a continuing need for scouts.

Duties: Scouts are required to visit fields every five to seven days, systematically examine them, and fill out report forms for growers and for their supervisor.  Crop health, growth stage, insect populations, disease pressure and weed abundance will be monitored and reported.  Training in each of these areas will be provided.  A small portion of the job may involve assisting with research projects we have under contract.  Fall work will include taking soil samples and assisting in harvesting research plots.

 TO APPLY:

Interested parties should contact Casey W. Carr at caseyw@agri-businessconsultants.com or (616) 824-1037 for more information and/or an application form.

Van Andel Research Institute

The Van Andel Research Institute (Grand Rapids, MI) is currently
accepting applications for their 2015 summer research internship
program. Summer interns will be paired with a scientific investigator
and/or their designee for an intense 10-week, paid research experience.
Students will gain an understanding of the latest research methods,
instruments and testing procedures. They will learn how to design
experiments and see how their test results can contribute to a larger
research project.

There will be 16-20 available internships for summer 2015. Because of
the shorter 10-week timeframe, this opportunity is ideal for students in
the biological or physical sciences with an interest in fitting in a
study abroad experience or another part-time job or internship during
the summer while still participating in the VAI internship.
