10% Campaign
| The 10% Campaign is a project of the Center For Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS). The campaign encourages you to spend 10 percent of your existing food dollars to support North Carolina food producers, businesses and communities. Why 10%? In North Carolina, we spend 35 billion dollars on food every year. If we spend 10% of our food dollars on local product, we can infuse over 3.5 billion dollars into the local economy. As avid supporters of the Durham Farmers' Market, you already know the many advantages to shopping locally. So, why join the campaign? It will re-affirm your commitment to shopping locally and it sends a strong message to policy makers about the importance of local foods! For more information visit: www.nc10percent.com

Happy Halloween! Tomorrow, there may be a vendor or two still in costume, but nothing like last weekend! Thank you to everyone who came out and voted in our first ever Vendor Costume Contest. With your votes and dollars, we raised over $900 for our Double Bucks Program which helps customers using SNAP (formerly known as Food Stamps) benefits stretch their dollars a little further when buying fresh food at the Market.
And now the moment you've been waiting for - the winners of the contest... The common garden pests at Four Leaf Farm came in first place. The pirate at Little Tree Farm was a close second and the sheep running Stoney Mountain Farm's booth came in third! There were so many creative and awesome costumes. I can't wait to see what they come up with next year! Check out our Facebook page to see lots of pictures of vendors in costume.
Did you know that the timing of Halloween, which has all kinds of ancient, pagan roots as a holiday, is actually based on the solar calendar? October 31st is the (approximate) mid point between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice. That means we are half way through fall. We've made it this far through the fall without having a frost. Which means the Market is still filled with a great mixture of summer and fall crops! Lush greens, jewel toned root vegetables, ginger and turmeric are right next to the remaining summer squashes, beans, corn, and eggplants. But, that might not last for much longer...
The forecast for this weekend is saying that the temperature may dip down to 32 at night here in Durham. That means that our farmers out in the countryside will likely experience colder nighttime temperatures and probably have the first frost of the fall. While it has felt like an extra warm fall for the past few days, this first threat of frost is pretty much right on target. The average first frost date in Durham County is October 24th with a 10-day deviation. Depending on how low the nighttime temperatures go this week, the market offerings could look quite a bit different next weekend. So, get your summer veggies while you still can!
See you at Market!

Chapel Hill Creamery
We will have our mild sausages for sale this Saturday! We should have Polish, Bratwurst, Mild Italian, Breakfast, and ground pork. Our Bratwurst is used at the Little Dipper restaurant in Durham and that is chef Ben's favorite. Our favorite is the Polish unless of course we're making pizza or having breakfast. Come get your favorite along with some ground beef for chili, burgers, or meatloaf. Sausage comes from whey fed pigs and the hams are included in the mix for a heartier sausage.
We're featuring two cheeses Saturday: Danziger which is mildly stinky, good on a cracker or melted into polenta, and our New Moon which is a young, slightly tart Camembert style in a button shape. We are tweaking the recipe and have some that look a little different but taste delicious. One for $5.00 and two for $8.00. Serve as is or in a salad with apples or pears.
We will make Fresh Mozzarella every other week starting Saturday and it will be available along with Smoked Mozzarella,Dairyland Farmers,Carolina Moon, Hickory Grove, Calvander, our 5 month old Swiss, Pheta, and a very few Smoked Farmers this week. Use our cheeses for snacking or cooking with the great fall produce. Bon Apetit.
