CH 4 "THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL"
I. INTRODUCTION

The journey to the cross should be the last foolish journey for every mind. Do not dwell upon it, but dismiss it as accomplished. If you can accept it as your own last foolish journey, you are also free to join my resurrection. Human living has indeed been needlessly wasted in a repetition compulsion. It reenacts the separation, the loss of power, the foolish journey of the ego in an attempt at reparation, and finally the crucifixion of the body or death.

1 A theoretical foundation such as the text is necessary as a background to make these exercises meaningful. Yet it is the exercises which will make the goal possible. An untrained mind can accomplish nothing. It is the purpose of these exercises to train the mind to think along the lines which the course sets forth.

2 The exercises are very simple. They do not require more than a few minutes, and it does not matter where or when you do them. They need no preparation. They are numbered, running from 1 to 365. The training period is one year. Do not undertake more than one exercise a day.

3 The purpose of these exercises is to train the mind to a different perception of everything in the world. The workbook is divided into two sections, the first dealing with the undoing of what you see now and the second with the restoration of sight. It is recommended that each exercise be repeated several times a day, preferably in a different place each time and, if possible, in every situation in which you spend any long period of time. The purpose is to train the mind to generalize the lessons, so that you will understand that each of them is as applicable to one situation as it is to another.

4 Unless specified to the contrary, the exercise should be practiced with the eyes open, since the aim is to learn how to see. The only rule that should be followed throughout is to practice the exercises with great specificity. Each one applies to every situation in which you find yourself and to everything you see in it. Each day's exercises are planned around one central idea, the exercises themselves consisting of applying that idea to as many specifics as possible. Be sure that you do not decide that there are some things you see to which the idea for the day is inapplicable. The aim of the exercises will always be to increase the application of the idea to everything. This will not require effort. Only be sure that you make no exceptions in applying the idea.

5 Some of the ideas you will find hard to believe, and others will seem quite startling. It does not matter. You are merely asked to apply them to what you see. You are not asked to judge them, nor even to believe them. You are asked only to use them. It is their use which will give them meaning to you, and show you they are true. Remember only this-you need not believe them, you need not accept them, and you need not welcome them. Some of them you may actively resist. None of this will matter nor decrease their efficacy. But allow yourself to make no exceptions in applying the ideas the exercises contain. Whatever your reactions to the ideas may be, use them. Nothing more than this is required.

My holiness blesses the world.

<AUDIO><VIDEO>

Voice and Music by CIMS SonShip Radio

1 This idea contains the first glimmerings of your true function in the world or why you are here. Your purpose is to see the world through your own holiness. Thus are you and the world blessed together. No one loses; nothing is taken away from anyone; everyone gains through your holy vision. It signifies the end of sacrifice because it offers everyone his full due. And he is entitled to everything because it is his birthright as a Son of God.

2 There is no other way in which the idea of sacrifice can be removed from the world's thinking. Any other way of seeing will inevitably demand payment of someone or something. As a result, the perceiver will lose. Nor will he have any idea why he is losing. Yet is his wholeness restored to his awareness through your vision. Your holiness blesses him by asking nothing of him. Those who see themselves as whole make no demands.

3 Your holiness is the salvation of the world. It lets you teach the world that it is one with you, not by preaching to it, not by telling it anything, but merely by your quiet recognition that in your holiness are all things blessed, along with you.

4 Today's four longer exercise periods, each to involve three to five minutes of practice, begin with the repetition of the idea for today followed by a minute or so of looking about you as you apply the idea to whatever you see:

5 My holiness blesses this chair.
My holiness blesses that window.

My holiness blesses this body.

6 Then close your eyes and apply the idea to any person who occurs to you, using his name and saying:

7 My holiness blesses you, [name]

8 You may continue the practice period with your eyes closed; you may open your eyes again and apply the idea for today to your outer world if you so desire; you may alternate between applying it to what you see around you and to those who are in your thoughts; or you may use any combination of these two phases of application which you prefer. The practice period should conclude with a repetition of the idea made with your eyes closed and another following immediately with your eyes open.

9 The shorter exercises consist of repeating the idea as often as you can. It is particularly helpful to apply it silently to anyone you meet, using his name as you do so. It is essential to use the idea if anyone seems to cause an adverse reaction in you. Offer him the blessing of your holiness immediately that you may learn to keep it in your own awareness.

LESSON 37
My holiness blesses the world.

Sarah's Commentary:

We have probably all asked ourselves the question from time to time as to why we are here. Haven't we all wondered what our function is in the world? This Lesson says, "This idea contains the first glimmerings of your true function in the world, or why you are here." (W.37.1.1) He tells us that "Your purpose is to see the world through your own holiness." (W.37.1.2) It becomes quite clear that, regardless of what we seem to be doing in the world, our function is to offer healing and blessing to the world, but what does this mean? It means that we must bring awareness to our judgments and our grievances, so that they can be released and space made for the blessings to come through us. There is nothing for us to try to do. It is all about undoing the way that we see now. With this undoing, we will see the world as blessed, because the world simply reflects what is in our minds. When we look with vision, we are joined in our minds with the Holy Spirit and blessings automatically extend through us. It is our unholiness, the choice for the ego thought system, that lays judgments on the world we see. We are reminded that projection makes perception, meaning that what we have chosen within, we see without, and they are the same.

Jesus goes on to say, "No one loses; nothing is taken away from anyone; everyone gains through your holy vision. It signifies the end of sacrifice because it offers everyone his full due." (W.37.1.4-5) There is no sacrifice to anyone. In the world of egos, this is not the case. We expect things in return for what we give. We want others to meet our needs. Someone always loses if we are to gain. It is a world of one or the other. If my needs are going to be met in my relationship, you must sacrifice yours. Our idea of bargaining and negotiating is to look after ourselves. It is all about who can gain more, and of course our needs are primary. It is all about self-interest.

It is a competitive world, because it reflects a thought system of competition. The same thought system of competition that is in our minds is what we believe is the thought system that everyone else holds as well. It all started with our belief that we were in competition with God. For us to achieve our independent self, He had to lose. The state of Oneness was no longer in our awareness. Now there was separation, and the idea that we stole our existence from God meant that He had to sacrifice. It was a case of one or the other. This is the thought that we continue to hold in our minds, as ideas do not leave their source. We project this thought onto our relationships and continue to hold the idea of competition, sacrifice and loss.

We also believe that to get what we want, there must be some kind of cost. That is what the bargain is about. I have to give something for what I am getting, meaning that I have to pay something in return for what I want. It seems to us that nothing comes without sacrifice. It is also inherent in the belief that we have to pay God back for what we have taken from Him, which is our individuality. We sacrifice for God in the hopes that He will go easy on us. "Any other way of seeing will inevitably demand payment of someone or something." (W.37.2.2) Anything we have in this world is from the belief that we have taken it at someone's expense. And we think the same way about others who have gained what they have in this world. Yet when we only bless, we are blessed. That is how "the idea of sacrifice can be removed from the world's thinking." (W.37.2.1) It is removed by seeing that our interests are the same and that we go "together or not at all." (T.19.IV.D.12.8)(ACIM OE T.19.V.d.101) It is removed when we release the thought system of one or the other and make healing our minds a priority. Ultimately, it means living by the golden rule.

Jesus tells us, "The Golden Rule asks you to do unto others as you would have them do unto you." (T.1.III.6.2)(ACIM OE T.1.I.64) However, there is a proviso here as follows: "This means that the perception of both must be accurate. The Golden Rule is the rule for appropriate behavior. You cannot behave appropriately unless you perceive correctly." (T.1.III.6.3-5)(ACIM OE T.1.I.64) The Golden Rule, as discussed in the Course, is about looking at everyone "from the perception of your own holiness to the holiness of others.(T.1.III.6.7)(ACIM OE T.1.I.64) What this means is that on our own, with the ego as our guide, we have no idea of how to extend love. We only want to use others to have our needs met. As long as we don't perceive our brothers as innocent, we have no idea how to do unto others.

By seeing how we are using our brothers for our own gain, we ask for help to see our sameness, which is a reflection of the Oneness we share with each other. "It lets you teach the world that it is one with you, not be preaching to it, not by telling it anything, but merely by your quiet recognition that in your holiness are all things blessed along with you." (W.37.3.2) We need do nothing except learn what Jesus is teaching us. It is not about trying to change anyone, only to heal our own minds. Thus, to know our own holiness, our only function is to offer forgiveness. That is the way we accept healing for our own minds. Holiness can only be extended through the healed mind. Forgiveness is the only way that we can clear away our ego thoughts. When the mind is healed it is clearly not me doing the blessing, but it can then shine through me to others. Our responsibility with this Lesson is to clear the channel. Then the love that shines in our right minds, where the Holy Spirit resides, is not blocked by our belief in sacrifice in which someone always has to pay. That is why Jesus tells us that our only responsibility as a miracle worker is to accept the Atonement for ourselves, meaning to accept the healing of our own minds.

Through this we have the power to work miracles. Any other way of seeing means that we lose, but we don't know why! Isn't that interesting? An earlier Lesson said, "God is in everything I see because God is in my mind." (W.30)  This Lesson is very similar. Because God is in my mind, I am very holy. Holiness is a state of innocence. It is seeing with innocent perception and no preconceived notions. It is a mind that is willing to give up the belief that what it currently knows is the truth. It is only blessing that extends from a mind that is no longer blocked by judgments.

The state of innocence is total. When we experience our holiness, it is a beautiful state that radiates love to the universe. When we are in this state, all is perfect. Nothing can go wrong. It is like a golden hue paints the world in beauty. All is well. The world does not have to change because there is no world to change. It is our thoughts about the world that must change. Often we throw away this moment of joy and peace when we swing back into judgment. That is how we play out the separation over and over. And what we choose is demonstrated in our actions. "Your witnessing demonstrates your belief, and thus strengthens it." (T.1.IV.4.7)(ACIM OE T.1.I.66) "You are asked to live so as to demonstrate that you are not an ego, and I do not choose God's channels wrongly." (T.4.VI.6.3)(ACIM OE T.4.VII.89) Our belief may still be weak, but through demonstration it is strengthened, and thus with each practice we do we remind ourselves about the truth of who we are. We are not the ego, meaning we are not the personality nor the self-concept that we currently think defines us in this world. We are not this character that seems to be in this dream. We are actually the dreamer of this dream. It is our script and since we wrote it, we can change it. Now, everything in the world that was used to keep us invested in the dream is turned over to the Holy Spirit so that the world and all of our relationships become perfect healing opportunities.

"Miracles are teaching devices for demonstrating it is as blessed to give as to receive." (T.1.I.16.1)(ACIM OE T.1.I.16 Miracles are teaching devices for demonstrating that it is more blessed to give than to receive.) This is a world of taking. It is a world of having our needs met and we see others as a way of meeting our needs. It is a world where we mostly look after what we think is our due, but now we learn that through extending blessing we receive it for ourselves. With each miracle, our minds are shifted in recognizing that we receive the blessing for ourselves each time we give it. "When a brother acts insanely, he is offering you an opportunity to bless him. His need is yours. You need the blessing you can offer him" (T.7.VII.2.1)(ACIM OE T.7.VIII.72)

Yes, it can be very challenging. Our usual response to insane behavior is to become angry and to justify our attack. Yet more and more we see through this practice that when our anger and judgment is brought to the light of truth, we can experience a beautiful shift and feel blessed as we offer blessing. When we see attack, it is a reflection of our own attack thoughts that we would rather see in someone else. "Those who attack do not know they are blessed." (T.7. VII.7.5)(ACIM OE T.7.VIII.77) They are still lost in the dream. It is our function to forgive,. Thus, we must look first to our own minds. Now blessing extends through us, when the blocks to love are released.

In our practice we are applying the idea to whatever we see in our casual survey. It is not that we are actually blessing the chair, rug, computer, or even a person that we see. It is just to realize that when we choose the blessing within our own minds, it envelops everything and everyone we see. It automatically extends through us. Then we close our eyes and apply the idea to any person we think of saying "My holiness blesses you, [name]." These are our special relationships where we may be withholding forgiveness, but now we choose to allow the blessing to come through. It is important to see that this is not just an exercise of affirmation, but of forgiveness with the goal of allowing the blessing to naturally come through us as a result of forgiving our expectations and demands of our special relationships. Conclude by repeating the idea with eyes closed and then again with eyes open.

Jesus tells us, "It is particularly helpful to apply it silently to anyone you meet, using his name as you do so. It is essential to use the idea if anyone seems to cause an adverse reaction in you. Offer him the blessing of your holiness immediately, that you may learn to keep it in your own awareness." (W.37.6.2-4) This is such a powerful part of the Lesson that we can work with throughout the day. It can shift everything for you. It means that you must stay vigilant throughout the day, watching your ego in action with its demands and requirements of others on behalf of your own happiness as you define it.

Also, if you have an adverse reaction to anyone you think of or meet, remember to "Refuse to accept anyone as without the blessing of Atonement, and bring him into it by blessing him." (T.14.V.11.5)(ACIM OE T.14.II.15) It is a day to pay attention to our thoughts and notice our inclination to keep others separate from us and be willing to accept correction for our minds. It is about looking at our demands of others today, whether overt demands or more subtle forms. It is always based on our perception that we are lacking and need something from others. When we identify with our holiness, there is no scarcity in us because we are everything and have everything. When we make demands of anyone we hold the belief that we are lacking and needy.

Love and blessings, Sarah

A Course in Miracles

Chapter Four

The Root of All Evil

I. Introduction

1 The Bible says that you should go with a brother twice as far as he asks. It certainly does not suggest that you set him back on his journey. Devotion to a brother cannot set you back either. It can lead only to mutual progress. The result of genuine devotion is inspiration, a word which properly understood is the opposite of fatigue. To be fatigued is to be dis-spirited, but to be inspired is to be in the spirit. To be egocentric is to be dispirited, but to be Self-centered in the right sense is to be inspired, or in the Soul. The truly inspired are enlightened and cannot abide in darkness.

2 You can speak from the Soul or from the ego, precisely as you choose. If you speak from the Soul, you have chosen "to be still and know that I am God." These words are inspired because they come from knowledge. If you speak from the ego, you are disclaiming knowledge instead of affirming it and are thus dispiriting yourself. Do not embark on foolish journeys because they are indeed in vain. The ego may desire them, but the Soul cannot embark on them because it is forever unwilling to depart from its Foundation.

3 The journey to the cross should be the last foolish journey for every mind.

4 Repetition compulsions can be endless unless they are given up by an act of will. Do not make the pathetic human error of "clinging to the old rugged cross." The only message of the crucifixion was that we can overcome the cross. Unless you do so, you are free to crucify yourself as often as you choose. But this is not the Gospel I intended to offer you. We have another journey to undertake, and if you will read these lessons carefully, they will help to prepare you to undertake it.

II. Right Teaching and Right Learning

5 We have spoken of many different human symptoms, and at this level there is almost endless variation. There is, however, only one cause of all them. The authority problem is "the root of all evil." Money is but one of its many reflections and is a reasonably representative example of the kind of thinking which stems from it. The idea of buying and selling implies precisely the kind of exchange that the Soul cannot understand at all because its supply is always abundant and all its demands are fully met.

6 Every symptom which the ego has made involves a contradiction in terms. This is because the mind is split between the ego and the Soul, so that whatever the ego makes is incomplete and contradictory. This untenable position is the result of the authority problem which, because it accepts the one inconceivable thought as its premise, can only produce ideas which are inconceivable. The term "profess" is used quite frequently in the Bible. To profess is to identify with an idea and offer the idea to others to be their own. The idea does not lessen; it becomes stronger.

7 A good teacher clarifies his own ideas and strengthens them by teaching them. Teacher and pupil are alike in the learning process. They are in the same order of learning, and unless they share their lessons, they will lack conviction. A good teacher must believe in the ideas which he professes, but he must meet another condition; he must also believe in the students to whom he offers his ideas. Many stand guard over their ideas because they want to protect their thought systems as they are, and learning means change. Change is always fearful to the separated ones because they cannot conceive of it as a change towards healing the separation. They always perceive it as a change towards further separation because the separation was their first experience of change.

8 You believe that if you allow no change to enter into your ego, your Soul will find peace. This profound confusion is possible only if one maintains that the same thought system can stand on two foundations. Nothing can reach the Soul from the ego, and nothing from the Soul can strengthen the ego or reduce the conflict within it. The ego is a contradiction. Man's self and God's Self are in opposition. They are opposed in creation, in will, and in outcome. They are fundamentally irreconcilable because the Soul cannot perceive and the ego cannot know. They are therefore not in communication and can never be in communication. Nevertheless, the ego can learn because its maker can be misguided but cannot make the totally lifeless out of the life-given. The Soul need not be taught, but the ego must.

9 The ultimate reason why learning is perceived as frightening is because learning does lead to the relinquishment (not destruction) of the ego to the light of the Soul. This is the change the ego must fear because it does not share my charity. My lesson was like yours, and because I learned it, I can teach it. I never attack your egos, but I do try to teach you how their thought system arose. When I remind you of your true creation, your egos cannot but respond with fear.

10 Teaching and learning are your greatest strengths now because you must change your mind and help others change theirs. It is pointless to refuse to tolerate change because you believe you can demonstrate that by doing so the separation has not occurred. The dreamer who doubts the reality of his dream while he is still dreaming is not really healing the level-split. You have dreamed of a separated ego, and you have believed in a world which rests upon it. This is very real to you. You cannot undo this by doing nothing and not changing.

11 If you are willing to renounce the role of guardian[s] of your thought system[s] and open [them] to me, I will correct [them] very gently and lead you home. Every good teacher hopes to give his students so much of his own thinking that they will one day no longer need him. This is the one real goal of the parent, teacher, and therapist. This goal will not be achieved by those who believe that they will lose their child or pupil or patient if they succeed. It is impossible to convince the ego of this because it goes against all of its own laws. But remember that laws are set up to protect the continuity of the system in which the law-maker believes.
