Our Little Cowgirl!
"Every Saturday morning we ask Ellie when she wakes up, 'what day is it?'  An incredible smile blossoms across her face and she wiggles two fingers on the top of her head. This is her sign, partly based in ASL and partly her own invention, for her favorite activity of the week: horses! Ellie has a rare genetic mutation on her KAT6A gene that expresses itself most prominently in extremely delayed speech, generally low muscle tone, and sensory seeking and aversion behaviors.
Her work at PoVa addresses all of these. For Ellie, even touching the horse (her favorite animal second to zebras--which are basically just horses with cool patterns) is an accomplishment of note.

"Over the past few months at PoVa, it has been incredible to see her balance, posture and confidence improve while riding. She already seems like quite the little cowgirl. Our family has never been 'horse people,' but I think Ellie is destined to teach us all how to ride over the next several years."  -- David Amrein, Father

Discovering Deklyn's Diagnosis ...

Have you ever tried to communicate with someone or something that doesn't speak the same language as you? With horses, it's a daily journey and learning process as we do our best to understand what they're trying to tell us. We must rely on subtle behavior changes, cause-and-effect reactions and other clues that might lead us to a conclusion about what's happening.

For the past several months, the PoVa staff has been struggling with understanding what Deklyn is trying to tell us. His complete change in behavior and obvious signs of discomfort have taken us on a journey from vet appointments, chiropractic exams, ideas of a diagnosis, to diet and medicine changes. This roller coaster ride of thinking we're on the right track to then seeing new signs of discomfort and being back at square one again has taken a toll not only on Deklyn, but on the entire PoVa staff. Although from time to time we are discouraged, we won't give up until we have our playful, irreplaceable member of our equine team back to full health.

Currently, Deklyn is receiving more tests and taking some time off from lessons as we hopefully find a diagnosis and can begin the healing process. Our horses are the key players that allow PoVa to fulfill our goal of changing lives one ride at a time, and without them we wouldn't have a therapeutic riding program. We ask you to please get involved today and help us to help Deklyn as we continue to piece together the pieces and try to discover what's causing him pain and discomfort.

Please donate today! Your one-time donation or PoVa Possi membership will help us provide the best care for all of our horses -- especially Deklyn! For a heartfelt donation of $20, $50 or $100 -- whatever amount you can give -- our horses will be able to continue to change lives and make dreams become reality. Thank you for your contribution!
