Thought for the Day

"Silence is not a virtue when charity calls for speech."

- Abba Poemen
(c. 400 CE)
Julian Barnes says in Flaubert's Parrot:

"When you're young you prefer the vulgar months, the fullness of the seasons. As you grow older you learn to like the in-between times, the months that can't make up their minds..."

Well, whether or not you agree with Julian, as we don our heavier coats this weekend, may we enjoy these "in-between times."   And remember the time change this weekend!

Shalom,
Dwight
We extend our prayer & concern

For the family of Rev. Carolyn Piper, and especially to her husband, Norm Gearhart.  Carolyn passed away suddenly on Saturday, Oct. 25th at her home.  Carolyn was a pioneer amongst Baptist women in ministry, having served for over twenty years as a member of the pastoral staff of University Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio, focusing much of her work on campus ministry.  Afterwards, she spent over twenty years as a pastoral counselor and therapist in the Columbus area, simultaneously continuing to guide new ministers-in-formation as a field education assistant and adjunct faculty member of the Methodist Theological School in Ohio .  Past president of the American Baptist Churches/USA Chaplains and Pastoral Counselors Ministers Council, this year, she was honored at our regional meeting for the 40th anniversary of her ordination to  Baptist ministry.  Carolyn was a "shining light," a dear friend and encouraging presence to many, and a tireless advocate for a more inclusive, more informed, more compassionate church.  She will be sorely missed.  Arrangements for a memorial service are being made at this time.

"Sandwiches for Sandwiches!"

Many of you know of Jay's business, the Steamroller Bagel food truck, which has been open next to The Beverage Source (1551 W. Church Street, Newark) every Thursday from 5:30-8 PM.  Each week, co-owners Jay and Corey donate 10% of their gross proceeds to charity, and this week's donation will be going towards towards supplies for Lunches on the Square.  Thanks, Jay!

Exciting news!
We are beginning renovation of the Annex kitchen this week.  The kitchen will be out of commission beginning this Friday, when the old cabinets come out.  Mike and Lyn Robertson will be painting over the weekend and the new kitchen goes in early next week.  Contact Lyn at 587-2488 if you would like to help with removing all the items from the kitchen Thursday (tomorrow) or putting them back one day next week, or if you're handy with a paintbrush!

THANKSGIVING MEAL AT TRINITY

On November 23rd, the United Church of Granville will partner with Trinity Episcopal Church in Newark to serve a community Thanksgiving meal. Trinity will supply the turkey, dressing, potatoes and gravy. UCG will be responsible for vegetables (corn and green beans) and desserts. Cans of corn and green beans can be dropped off at church. Frozen vegetables and desserts can also be dropped off. There is a freezer in the basement.

Based on attendance at Lunches on the Square, we anticipate serving over a 100 meals. Any donations are welcome. Call Linda Mossholder 522-6350 if you have questions.
