Shortleaf Pine Initiative Meeting! On the day after the conference, Friday Oct. 11, the second of the stakeholder workshops in support of writing the Shortleaf Pine Conservation Plan will be held at the Hotel Roanoke. The workshop will be held from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Lunch will be provided. The workshop is FREE but we ask that you fill out and return a registration form to [email protected] by October 4th so we can appropriately plan. AFE Awards Banquet: Every year, AFE holds an annual awards banquet. This year, it will be Tuesday Oct. 8 at 6:30pm. We will be giving The Stoddard Lifetime Achievement Award to an individual who has made a significant contribution to fire ecology and management in the eastern US. This award is named after the long-time prescribed fire advocate for longleaf pine management, Herbert Stoddard, Sr. We will also be presenting 2 awards to students, our Graduate and Undergraduate Student Excellence Awards. The Banquet guest speaker will be Dr. David Van Lear. If you didn't include the banquet in your registration, it's not too late to sign up or to add a guest. Register for the banquet here.
Field Trip Details: An optional field trip will be offered on the last day of the conference, October 10. It will be designed for open discussion of problems and opportunities for fire management in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Stops include views of prescribed burning in different cover types on the Jefferson National Forest and a wildfire at the Barbours Creek Wilderness Area. The registration fee covers transportation and a box lunch. We will leave the Hotel Roanoke at 8 am and return at approximately 5 pm. We will see, present and discuss:
1) Fire effects on wildlife and vegetation in two areas prescribed burned several times. The field trip will visit ecological systems including pine/oak-heath, post-oak woodlands, and mixed dry oak forests,
2) Monitoring techniques developed by the Fire Learning Network and other partners used for vegetation and wildlife, and
3) The political, social, and practical effects of wildfire and post fire management in designated Wilderness area.
