First Apartment in Three Years

It was a special moment when we presented Kenzo with the keys to his new apartment. Kenzo has lived in our supportive housing facility (Cooper House) for a couple years and his health and financial stability has improved to the point where he is able to transition to independent living. Social workers will continue working with him on his goals as he transitions into his new housing. This will be Kenzo's first apartment in three years.  We are very excited for Kenzo and celebrate with him.

Volunteering at Doorways

Like many non-profits, Doorways relies on the dedication and service of our volunteers to assist staff in providing people with safe, secure and affordable housing. But what does that look like? Monday-Thursday our volunteers provide tutoring to children at our Mama/Kaya residency. Volunteers have started a linens drive for emergency housing, mailed out award letters to our clients, led activities for our residents and are helping us plan and implement our annual gala RED H.O.T.!

If you are interested in learning more about our current or upcoming volunteer opportunities email us at [email protected] or call 314-535-1919 ext. 3049.
Meet our New Staff Members

Doorways is proud to welcome three new staff members as we kick off 2015. Cheryl Higgins is our new Emergency Housing Resource Specialist and comes to us from St. Patrick's Center where she was a Senior Housing Specialist. Cheryl has nearly 10 years of housing experience including positions at Places for People and Community Living Opportunities in Lawrence, KS. In addition to her passion of housing, Cheryl also enjoys the challenge of school. She currently has a master's degree in management and leadership and will complete another masters in human resources later this year.

Jamika Irby is our new Jumpstart Program Coordinator. Jamika has multiple years experience working with families to assist them with obtaining a better quality of life. Jamika worked previously with Family Facets and BJC Behavioral Health where she provided skills training and community resources to disadvantaged families. She graduated from Missouri State University in 2005 with a bachelor of social work and may pursue her her master's in social work in the future.

In addition to these great hires, Tracy Unger took over as Administrator of Cooper House on December 1, 2014. Tracy has more than 15 years experience in healthcare administration, and was previously an administrator at Loving Care Assisted Living and Gietner Home. Throughout her career, Tracy has become a leader in long-term health across the state. She has been on the boards of Leading Age Missouri, Health Care Facilities of Missouri and the Governor's Advisory Council on Aging.
