"Time Flies" by Emily Dvorin |

Vegetable bags, baling twine, plastic container lids, cable ties, empty spools and more spark the creative ingenuity of these artists to see beyond an item’s intended use. See how objects we discard or summarily dismiss are given new purpose as fiber art.

Planning for Light Rail
The Prospect Park neighborhood, established in 1885, has an outstanding feature. Tower Hill Park? Pratt School? Textile Center? Well, yes, yes and yes! But with the arrival of the Central Corridor light rail the feature we're concerned about right now is PARKING and access to these great features.
A recent survey helped with our planning. Thank you to those who participated. More opportunities to participate will develop soon.
Why focus more on planning now? Leaders from the neighborhood have secured funds meant specifically to help neighborhoods along the Central Corridor. This means that planning for the entire neighborhood can be accomplished faster, with more resources and more involvement. The neighborhood has also been able to hire professionals to guide the process.
Our goal is to create solutions for both:
1. Short-term plans. The time period between today and the opening of the light rail line in 2014 (construction).
2. Long-range plans. The time period after light rail opens (post construction).
Textile Center and Prospect Park are working closely together to enhance the opportunities to live, work, visit and enjoy the place we call home and to ensure you'll feel right at home here!
Read updates and ways to get involved at the Prospect Park East River Road (www.pperr.org) neighborhood website and from Textile Center communications. Also, be sure to bookmark Textile Center’s parking page to see the best parking options during the coming months.

“For Pele’: Playing with Fire” by Julie Branch
“For Pele’: Playing with Fire” by Julie Branch of Rotterdam, NY won the People's Choice Award for "Figuratively Fiber" exhibition of art dolls. There were lots of votes and our guests had many favorites. Thanks to all the artists who shared their work and to Richard and Jodi Creager, the jurors, who selected such a great diversity of art dolls for Textile Center to exhibit.
“For Pele’: Playing with Fire” was purchased and is now a part of a couple's fiber art collection.

SDA Biennial Fashion Show, Bodies of Water
Carter Smith will be the Featured Artist for the SDA Biennial Fashion Show, Bodies of Water. The Fashion Show, a perennial highlight of each biennial Surface Design Association conference, features a spectacular array of garments, juried from entries from SDA members.
Carter Smith has been creating museum quality shibori fabrics for 40 years. Shibori is an elaborate technique involving pleating and tying fabric then applying dyes in layers. His shibori pieces have been exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States and many foreign countries, including Japan.
This one-of-a-kind fabric is also used in the original bias-cut apparel designs Carter has developed. These have been worn in film, used in ballet productions and are cut to flatter all women. The designs are timeless, season-less and unique. Surplus pieces are handcrafted back into yardage and sewn into special designs.

Be a Volunteer Designer for
Wearable Art Slam |
The Unraveled DIY Festival is June 10, 6 to 9 p.m. at Rapson Hall at the U of MN |
At the Unraveled DIY Festival on June 10 from 6 to 9 p.m., artist Candy Kuehn is hosting Wearable Art Slam. Volunteers are needed as designers to help create instantaneous art garments for attendees of the DIY Festival. No experience is necessary.
Volunteers need to attend two training sessions in order to be a designer for the Wearable Art Slam. Training sessions are Wednesday, May 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During the sessions, you will help prepare recycled fabrics and materials and learn basic dye skills to use with a variety of fibers. You will also learn spontaneous design concepts and tools to use while you help Unraveled DIY Festival attendees make wearable art.
Interested? Sessions are free but you should RSVP by emailing candy@kolmon.com or calling 612-272-1626.
The Unraveled DIY Festival is held in conjunction with the Confluence Conference. |
