January 2014

Happy New Year!  What resolutions have you set for 2014?  Recent studies have indicated that our success is not so much about the resolutions we make, but the steps we take in trying to meet them.  If we make commitments to others, for example, then we're more likely to keep these commitments.  If it's something that we can easily add to our daily routine, then it can become habit.  So, for 2014, don't worry about setting the world on fire...just set 3 ideas that you can actually implement.  Take 3 simple ideas, but ensure that you have at least 2-3 steps involved in keeping these commitments.

For example, if it's about savings, then set up the automatic transfer now to move the money from your bank account to the savings account or Tax Free Savings Account.

If it's about Losing Weight, then agree that if you fall off your diet, then you have to pay your colleague a certain amount.

If it's about exercising more, then have a plan to meet 3 friends weekly.  You are more likely to stick to this as you don't want to be the one to let the group down.

Also, how does it fit with your Spouse?  Have some fun and determine your money personality by taking this quiz.  Money Personality Quiz.  The Money Couple is a great website about how to manage money and keep your relationship healthy while you're at it.  Since many relationships suffer stress due to finances, this is a great place to start when considering your New Year's Resolutions.  Keep this one bookmarked for future use!

Tax Free Savings Account Contribution Limits for 2014:  $5,500 is the new limit effective January 2nd.

Remember, TFSA's are a great savings vehicle for both short and long term planning.  Depending on your priorities, you can invest in almost anything.  The key is you are not restricted to high interest options.  Consider any combination of GIC's, stocks, bonds, ETF's and mutual funds to help build the accounts over time.

RRSP Contribution Limits:  2013 Limit: $23,820.

2014 RRSP Limit:  $24,270, or 18% of prior year's income.

Markets:

Will 2014 continue the strong market rally?  Watch for updates on the new year and what experts are saying.  Some of these will be provided with our updates provided in the next few weeks.

The US Debt ceiling will be discussed again before mid-February.  What effect will this have?  As the market continues to sustain itself, the government issues are starting to have less impact than they did 2 years ago.  However, please keep in mind that there will still be volatility and we still have to ride it, and ensure we have some safe havens for our money (just not all of it!).

The big picture still entails that a long-term responsible fiscal plan is in order.  To help keep you up to date on this beyond the headlines, read our "Big Picture", or "Playbook".

These are updated regularly and help identify how these events can play out on the markets.

Tax Planning: All tax receipts will soon be printed.  T3's and T5's are mailed at the end of February.  RRSP receipts will start to be mailed in Mid-January, and will continue to be mailed weekly until the RRSP Deadline, March 3rd, 2014.

RRSP Maximum for 2013:  $23,820

For 2014:  $24,270 (or 18% of your earned income in the prior year, less any pension adjustment)
