Quick Tips:  Do You Care What Companies You Are Investing In?

Ever wondered how you can have a say in what your companies are doing?

How can you help impact the ecological footprint?

Socially Responsible or Ethical Investing is considering investments that go through an ethical screening process.  There are some indexes and companies that offer this type of service.  The screening pertains to environmental, social, and governance analysis.

Over 65% of managed investments in Europe use this type of screening process, and so does approximately 50% of Canadian pension assets.

While a common misnomer is you can't get good returns and choose your companies from a socially responsible perspective, statistics are proving otherwise.  As we become more aware of our ecological responsibility, both from an ethical and human rights standpoint, many companies will recognize that it's better business to be ecologically responsible as it reduces their risk.  That often means better returns. If you are interested in learning more about this, please speak with your advisor.

MARKETS:

We've seen a drop in the equity markets of late, with a 10% drop in the TSX since its peak just a few months ago.  In fact, this has been expected as I've discussed at all my recent meetings.  As this is part of the natural ebb and flow of the markets, it's providing an opportunity for some to purchase holdings at more reasonable prices.  Remember, some still think the market is too pricey, but many analysts are starting to see more reasonable valuations.  The market often over-reacts both on the upside and the downside.  Should we still hold our equities?  I say YES, and simply trim when we see above average returns.  As this has been the case, we've been actively doing that until recently.

Remember, Warren Buffet once said:  "Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful."

Alfred Lam has an interesting bond article, and why we should still hold some fixed income for a smoother ride.
