Farm Bureau awards literacy grants
The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture awarded 11 $500 mini-grants to communities across the nation, including two in Illinois. The grants are awarded through the foundation's White-Reinhardt Fund for Education program.
 
The grants are allocated through county and state Farm Bureaus and are used to create new agricultural literacy projects or expand on existing agricultural literacy efforts.

Farms, acreage buck national trend
At a time when the number of farms and acreage is trending downward, Logan County is going the opposite direction.

Nationwide, the number of farms decreased 4.33 percent from 2.204 million to 2.109 million from 2007 to 2012, and land in farms shrank 0.8 percent from more than 922 million acres to more than 914 million acres during that same time.

Evens, a junior and eight-year 4-H member from Lafayette, took home first-place honors in her halter class and the title of reserve champion western halter. She competed at the Tippecanoe County 4-H Fair.
