Taking the next step to higher education
CJCC student Azel Walls to enroll at WV State University in January
Charleston Job Corps student Azel Walls is about to take the next step on his road to landing a promising career and bright future. Azel, a 22-year-old student from Charleston, WV, has been accepted at West Virginia State University and will begin classes in January 2015, majoring in engineering.

This move to higher education is just the latest of his educational and job training pursuits to position himself for success. Azel graduated from the Mountaineer Challenge Academy with a GED before entering Job Corps in November 2013. At Charleston Job Corps, he completed the carpentry trade under the leadership of Carpentry Instructor Tommy Fitzwater, and received Green Awareness, OSHA and Scaffolding certifications, all which increase his employment opportunities. He completed work-based learning at Southmoor Hill Apartments, South Charleston, WV, where he worked four weeks doing general carpentry and a variety of other construction duties.

For Azel, Job Corps has been a stepping stone to new opportunities. The same can be true for other Job Corps students if "you focus on your education and never give up," Azel says.
