This January, Resolve to Read

JANUARY 2015
Happy New Year to all! Now that the holidays are over, hopefully all of our lives have quieted down enough so that we can get off to a good start on this year's resolution: read more! Below, we've compiled a great batch of suggestions to help with that, from Miranda July's first novel to Rebecca Newberger Goldstein's look at the persistence of philosophy.

Happy reading,
Serena

On Such a Full Sea:
A Novel
by Chang-rae Lee

"Lee has always been preoccupied by the themes of hope and betrayal, by the tensions that arise in small lives in the midst of great social change. His marvelous new book, which imagines a future after the breakdown of our own society, takes on those concerns with his customary mastery of quiet detail -- and a touch of the fantastic." --Andrew Sean Greer, The New York Times Book Review

Astonish Me
by Maggie Shipstead

"Shipstead's descriptions of dancers in action are some of the clearest and most lovely I've read. But it is her characters' humanity that makes this book worth the time of any reader, regardless of how many left feet you may have." --Rachel C., Harvard Book Store

The New Jim Crow:
Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness

Plato at the Googleplex:
Why Philosophy Won't Go Away
by Rebecca Newberger Goldstein

"In Plato at the Googleplex, Rebecca Newberger Goldstein set out to showcase, in sometimes startling ways, the continuing relevance of a classic philosopher. But what's remarkable is that she actually brings off this tour de force with both madcap brilliance and commanding authority." --Michael Dirda, The Washington Post

Harvard Square Book Circle
discusses
A Tale for the Time Being

The Harvard Square Book Circle, our in-store book club, will discuss Ruth Ozeki's A Tale for the Time Being.

In Tokyo, sixteen-year-old Nao has decided there's only one escape from her aching loneliness and her classmates' bullying. But before she ends it all, Nao first plans to document the life of her great grandmother, a Buddhist nun who's lived more than a century. A diary is Nao's only solace -- and will touch lives in ways she can scarcely imagine.

Across the Pacific, we meet Ruth, a novelist living on a remote island who discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox-possibly debris from the devastating 2011 tsunami. As the mystery of its contents unfolds, Ruth is pulled into the past, into Nao's drama and her unknown fate, and forward into her own future.
