In March, Doorways was proud to welcome two university groups as part of the alternative spring break program. Over 35 students from the
University of Michigan and
University of Georgia spent their spring breaks giving back to the community and volunteering for our organization.
The students completed many projects including repainting our new resident activity room, conducting an I.T. inventory and helping spruce up our properties for the spring. In addition to these major tasks, volunteers also offered companionship to our residents and assisted with various administrative functions.
Patrick Young, HR Generalist and Volunteer Coordinator, said, "While Doorways benefits greatly
from having groups like these volunteer throughout the year, it's always so impressive to see how they connect to our mission and leave with a much better understanding of HIV/AIDS and homelessness. It is our hope that these college volunteers return to their schools and become even stronger advocates for those who are disadvantaged."
As a way to thank the university groups, the students were sent off with a farewell luncheon and recognition. If you have a group that is interested in volunteering with Doorways, such as a church group or youth group, please contact Patrick at 314-535-1919, ext. 3172 or email
