Best City

 

 

This week, Creative Loafing showcased their "Best of the Bay," including the reader choices in a variety of categories. St. Petersburg was chosen as "Best City."

Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin accepted the award. 

 

 

 

The City of St. Petersburg was also recognized for "Best Symbol of a New Era," for flying the Pride Flag over St. Pete City Hall during Pride Month.

We wondered, how many problems are around us right now, right here in this city. If you open up the app, it tells you!

10 News: Student journalists' work wows crowd

 

For 10 years, student journalists have been documenting the people, places and stories in their neighborhoods through the Journeys in Journalism program at Melrose Elementary, John Hopkins Middle and Lakewood High schools.

 

Friday evening their hard work was on display again on opening night of the exhibit "Through Our Eyes: Midtown and Beyond." The work portrays significant elements in the students' communities through photography, writing and multimedia.

Kelly Young was stunned when she got a letter in January informing her that her disability payments, those of her daughter, and their Medicare benefits were being cut off. The Social Security Administration said she lied on her application when she failed to disclose she owned a house.

St. Petersburg Tribune: Church to revive potluck for homeless after suspension

 

Twelve months ago, more than 100 angry activists packed City Hall saying the city's budget did nothing to improve rundown neighborhoods or lower youth unemployment in poor neighborhoods.

 

City council members also clashed with then-Mayor Bill Foster, refusing to approve the budget until they spent hours carving out more money for economic development and neighborhood improvements.

10 News: Rays donate equipment to St. Pete students

 

For the third time this season, the Tampa Bay Rays, pitcher Chris Archer, WTSP 10 News and Good Sports presented a variety of new sports and recreation equipment to a local youth program in need of support - this time equipping Melrose Elementary School with new playground equipment, P.E. necessities, and baseball gear.

St. Petersburg Tribune: 41-story condo planned for prime downtown St. Pete property

 

A West Palm Beach developer has revealed plans for perhaps the most prime piece of undeveloped real estate in the city's downtown.

 

The Kolter Group is planning a 13-story hotel and 41-story condo tower on the Tropicana block on Central Avenue, a $120 million construction project that will transform the eastern end of Central Avenue and suggests that the downtown development boom is still gaining pace.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Petersburg adopts $483 million city budget after quick hearing

 

The City Council adopted a $483.35 million operating budget for 2015, after just about an hour of discussion and public comment on Thursday. 

 

With subsequent unanimous votes, the council also approved a 6.77 millage rate - the same as last year - and a five-year capital improvement plan.
