Happy America Recycles Day!

In celebration of America Recycles Day, November 15th, we're excited to promote a couple of our partners' efforts.  A new web page at the OEPA has many locations where prescriptions drugs can be recycled safely.  There are quite a few in southeast Ohio!

Keep America Beautiful has also launched a new campaign called "I want to be recycled."  They have some sweet signs and commercials that you can use to encourage recycling where ever you live or work.  Check out one of their videos.

Read on to find out about more good work going on the region.

Got a business idea that will build the zero waste economy? Join us!

Entrepreneurs who look at trash and see treasure will gather on December 5th in The Plains to network and learn about resources for building a zero waste economy in southeast Ohio.

During the gathering, a panel of experts will discuss strategies for business planning, securing capital, assessing demand, network building, and creative marketing.  Following the panel, attendees will have time to share their ideas, discuss resources they need, and network with interested parties.

Event is free, but registration is required.  Click here for more details.

Action planning underway!

Nearly 40 people gathered in October to launch a zero waste planning process for Athens and Hocking Counties.

The action plan will chart a pathway to reduce landfill waste and increase resource recovery.  It will be used to leverage funding, improve education, improve infrastructure, increase business development, decrease illegal dumping, and make recycling, composting, reuse, and waste reduction easier for participants.   Stay tuned for your opportunity to participate in a public vetting process!!

New faces and goals for the Association of Ohio Recyclers

At the 2013 Association of Ohio Recyclers Conference, several new faces joined the Board.  A new executive director, Arley Owens, has taken up the reigns as AOR moves into its 25th year of existence.

According to Owens, AOR will play a more active role in the state through the creation of several recycling councils for zero waste, universities & colleges, minorities, and education & technology.  A Business Resource Exchange for AOR members, and a program for college graduates to seek employment in the recycling and sustainability field are also being explored.

To help reach these goals and add expertise from southeast Ohio, Kyle O'Keefe, the zero waste initiative coordinator for Rural Action, was elected to the board.  To stay up to date with AOR's progress and their 25th year gala, visit their brand new website.

Thank You Athens Foundation!

Special thanks to the Athens Foundation who recently announced that they will fund our Zero Waste Education and Outreach Program.  We will be able to conduct more waste assessments with businesses and residents, offer additional events zero waste services, provide more adults and youth with educational programming, and clean up more dump sites.

Regional News

AOZWI is working with Resource Recycling Systems, a national environmental consulting firm, to develop a map of industries in southeast Ohio that are using recycled feed stock to manufacture new goods.  The information will be used to promote the economic impacts of the recycling sector and to develop strategies for assisting and growing these businesses.

Look for a special newsletter in December sharing this work.
