Get Involved: The Holiday Spirit of Dana Point
Decorating Contest Aims to Spread Holiday Cheer & Tourism throughout City
|
IlluminOcean, hosted and presented by The Resorts of Dana Point, will debut in Dana Point for the 2014 holiday season. This unique event will feature a magical festival of lights staged amongst the spectacular coastal setting of our Dana Point Harbor. IlluminOcean is expected to attract thousands of visitors to Dana Point during its 40 Nights of Holiday Lights. While the first year will see the majority of the lights in the Harbor, IlluminOcean has plans on expanding each year into other areas of Dana Point to create a citywide attraction. Additionally, the City of Dana Point is adding new holiday lights at the entrances of Town Center and new citywide holiday pole banners.
The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce would like to encourage our local businesses to get in on the fun and help spread the magic of IlluminOcean throughout Dana Point during the Holiday Season.
We are pleased to announce a new business holiday lights contest, the Holiday Spirit of Dana Point. The contest is focused on including and showcasing our local businesses during the holiday season and encouraging shopping and dining in Dana Point. We invite you to be creative in decorating for the holidays and help us show what makes Dana Point such a special community.
To help you get started and play on the IlluminOcean theme, the City of Dana Point has purchased a limited number of light covered dolphin sculptures to give away for free to our local businesses to use them in their decor. Numbers are limited so hurry and pick up your dolphin.
To participate in the Holiday Spirit of Dana Point business decorating contest, contact the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce to sign up and pick up your free lighted dolphin starting November 18, 2014 at the Chamber office. Dolphins are also available at the Public Works Office in City Hall.
Judging will take place between December 19th and 22nd. Judging will be limited to businesses within the city limits of Dana Point, on exterior decor only and must be completely installed by December 19, 2014. Contest rules subject to change without notice.

Dana Point Businesses Are There For You. On November 29, Will You Be There For Them?
|
The holidays are right around the corner and there's no better time to start your shopping.
Skip the mall and support your local Dana Point small businesses - keep your tax dollars in Dana Point and help to support the businesses who have been such great supporters of our amazing city.
Additionally, while the City and South Coast Water District continue to improve the infrastructure of Dana Point, we want to strongly encourage residents to continue to shop locally and support the businesses on Del Prado that are affected by this large-scale construction project.
Shop small. Shop Local. Shop Dana Point.

An Overview of New 2015 Laws Affecting California Employers
|
As in years past, California enacted many new laws that will affect the day-to-day operations, practices and policies of California businesses in 2015.
Some of the new laws, such as mandatory paid sick leave, make significant changes to California's legal landscape. Other new laws make changes to different parts of existing law or may only affect employers in specified industries.
CalChamber's free "An Overview of New 2015 Laws Affecting California Employers" white paper identifies some of the noteworthy new laws from the California Legislature, including:
- Mandatory paid sick leave, with penalties for noncompliance
- New requirement to include training on preventing abusive conduct (such as bullying) as part of mandatory supervisor sexual harassment training
- Expanded liability for employers who contract for labor
- Plus, other new laws in key employment areas

Severe Drought Conditions Have Worsened Additional Conservation Measures are Required

A message from our friends at South Coast Water District
Water reservoirs statewide have reached critically low levels.
In 2014, we have used 1% MORE water than in 2013, despite the statewide requirement that we reduce water use by 20%.
We need to limit irrigation using potable water sprinkler systems to 1 day per week with a maximum of 10 minutes of watering per sprinkler station/zone starting on December 1, 2014 until further notice.
Watering Schedule
- Residential: Monday Only
- Businesses, Government, Schools, HOAs: Wednesday Only
Water between 5pm and 9am
If water supplies are further restricted in 2015, we may need to decrease water use by 40%.
Please note the new irrigation requirement and schedule. Thank you for your efforts to conserve water.

A Message from Dana Point Youth Baseball
|
Dear Community Business Member,
I am a member of the fundraising team for Dana Point Youth Baseball and reaching out for proud sponsors from our local business community. DPYB is a registered non-profit organization and becoming a sponsor helps sustain our league.
As a resident of Dana Point since 1973, I became involved in DPYB in an effort to give something back to the community. DPYB is an all-volunteer league and the coaches are local residents who help young athletes become better baseball players and future leaders with purpose, goals and core values.
What occurs during a season is the growth of a young person who learns valuable life lessons through baseball. They learn to work together as teammates, show respect to each other, listen to the coach, accept an umpire's decision, win with humility and lose with grace. They learn how to perform underpressure. They learn tolerance in accepting others for who they are and their abilities. They learn to communicate with each other and integrate themselves in a game of strategy and tactics. All of these tools combines help
them to not only be game-ready, but life ready. In the process, they have great fun, make friends and build memories with each other. The list of learning lessons is countless and when the season is over, the individual is not only a better baseball player, but a better person.
Becoming a sponsor speaks volumes to the many great families who participate in the DPYB league. Please contact me if you are interested in becoming a sponsor.Thank you for your consideration and I truly appreciate your time.
Respectfully,
Rocco DiFrancesco

IlluminOCEAN: 40 Nights of Holiday Lights
The Majestic Sealife of Dana Point Shines Bright in a Dazzling Holiday Display
|
The holidays will shine bright this year as Dana Point IlluminOcean debuts 18 large scale lighting attractions for forty nights of holiday lights at the Dana Point Harbor! This wonderland by the sand - created and funded by The Resorts of Dana Point to become an annual winter tradition - features a brilliant spectacle of 18 oversized lighting sculptures with over 225,000 LED lights, and is free to the public for viewing nightly at sundown beginning November 26, 2014. As the whale watching capital of the world, and proud stewards of the coastal ecosystems which drives most of the destination's tourism traffic, the sea-themed holiday lighting sculptures showcase the city's devotion to ocean preservation.
From octopus and sharks, to starfish and surfers, the dazzling displays are highlighted by a towering glow-motion tree, light tunnels stretching longer than a football field and over a dozen gigantic lighting sculptures - so big visitors can walk through and inside the belly of a glowing 40-foot Blue whale!
As visitors stroll through the colorful collection of immersive attractions, every step is filled with vibrant sights and sounds while roaming street performers entertain crowds, glow merchandise shines and "Whale Eyes" 3D glasses give a must-see holographic look at this holiday spectacle. See the lights. Explore the sights. This year and every year, only at Dana Point IlluminOcean. For additional information, visit IlluminOCEAN.com. |
