AFERegion8VPPaulCantrell Member Social

Last month, AFE Region 8 in cooperation with AFE Chapter 33 in Boston, held a Member Social at the New England Waterworks Museum in Chestnut Hill.  The building's history of innovation in delivering water to Greater Boston over the years is quite interesting. Attendees enjoyed a presentation on what makes the structure unique by the museum's executive director, Marcis Kempe, who gave an entertaining talk on the structure's history.

The Waterworks Museum is located on the site of the original Chestnut Hill Reservoir and pumping station. By the 1880's, Boston's water system couldn't keep up with the rapid growth of the city and its water needs. Chestnut Hill was identified as the location for a new reservoir and main pumping station. The original station was built in 1887, but by the 1890's, the need for more water resulted in the installation of increasingly powerful (and enormous!) pumping engines, which operated every day until the 1970's, when the site was taken offline, and Boston's water supply shifted to the Quabbin Reservoir. The Chestnut Hill Reservoir, however, is still used as a back-up source of water in case of emergencies.

Award to Steve Nicholas

Members from several states joined together for an pleasant evening of networking, capped off by dinner and a tour of parts of the museum most don't get to see.  As part of the evening's festivities,  I was pleased to publicly recognize AFE's Steve Nicholas for his efforts in advancing professional education among our members here in New England.  See below for a photo of the official presentation.  Steve has been teaching our CPMM Review Class (see below for info on the next class) for some time now, and he has an impressive success rates in preparing candidates to pass the exam and earn their CPMM designation.

In Memoriam

It is with sadness that I inform you of the recent passing of Edward J. Ouellet, father of our regional Secretary, Alan Ouellet.  We extend our  deepest sympathies to Alan and his family, and to the Filter Sales & Service team.

Edward Ouellet founded Filter Sales & Service, Inc. in 1953, and the firm was much more than a business enterprise for him.  Loyal and committed to his employees and customers, he made many lifelong friends through his business relationships.  Mr. Ouellet belonged to many professional organizations and held life membership in both AFE and ASHRAE.  (Alan remembers his first of many AFE meetings as a young man.)  He was a great leader, had many fond memories of AFE, and recognized the value of AFE's great networking opportunities.  He will be missed.

Sincerely,

Paul Cantrell
