Maranatha, Maranatha,
 Come, Oh Lord.
 And set us free!

The Baptism of the Lord

It happened in those days that Jesus came from
Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the
Jordan by John.
Readings:

First Reading

Is 55:1-11

 Thus says the LORD:
All you who are thirsty,
come to the water!
You who have no money,
come, receive grain and eat;
come, without paying and without cost,
drink wine and milk!
Why spend your money for what is not bread,
your wages for what fails to satisfy?
Heed me, and you shall eat well,
you shall delight in rich fare.
Come to me heedfully,
listen, that you may have life.
I will renew with you the everlasting covenant,
the benefits assured to David.
As I made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander of nations,
so shall you summon a nation you knew not,
and nations that knew you not shall run to you,
because of the LORD, your God,
the Holy One of Israel, who has glorified you.

Seek the LORD while he may be found,
call him while he is near.
Let the scoundrel forsake his way,
and the wicked man his thoughts;
let him turn to the LORD for mercy;
to our God, who is generous in forgiving.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD.
As high as the heavens are above the earth
so high are my ways above your ways
and my thoughts above your thoughts.

For just as from the heavens
the rain and snow come down
and do not return there
till they have watered the earth,
making it fertile and fruitful,
giving seed to the one who sows
and bread to the one who eats,
so shall my word be
that goes forth from my mouth;
my word shall not return to me void,
but shall do my will,
achieving the end for which I sent it.

Discussion Questions:

1.    What are some things that you work hard to acquire that don't satisfy?  How much time, effort and money do you spend trying to get them?  What is the one thing you must do to attend the sumptuous banquet provided by the Father?

2.    "For my thoughts are not your thought, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord."  According to Is 55:1-11, What should we do to align our ways to God's ways?

Second Reading

1 Jn 5:1-9

Beloved:
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God,
and everyone who loves the Father
loves also the one begotten by him.
In this way we know that we love the children of God
when we love God and obey his commandments.
For the love of God is this,
that we keep his commandments.
And his commandments are not burdensome,
for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world.
And the victory that conquers the world is our faith.
Who indeed is the victor over the world
but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

This is the one who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ,
not by water alone, but by water and blood.
The Spirit is the one who testifies,
and the Spirit is truth.
So there are three that testify,
the Spirit, the water, and the blood,
and the three are of one accord.
If we accept human testimony,
the testimony of God is surely greater.
Now the testimony of God is this,
that he has testified on behalf of his Son.

Discussion Questions

1.    Based on Pope Francis' statement below what is your mission now?

Our baptism has changed us, given us a new and glorious hope, and empowered us to bring God's redeeming love to all, particularly the poor, in whom we see the face of Christ. Our baptism has also given us a share in the Church's mission of evangelization; as disciples, we are also missionaries.

As we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord this Sunday, let us ask him to renew in us the grace of our Baptism and to make us, with all our brothers and sisters, true children of God and living members of his body, the Church.

2.    How exactly do the Spirit, the water, and the blood testify? and to what?

Gospel

Mk 1:7-11

This is what John the Baptist proclaimed:
"One mightier than I is coming after me.
I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.
I have baptized you with water;
he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee
and was baptized in the Jordan by John.
On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open
and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.
And a voice came from the heavens,
"You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."

Discussion Questions:

1.     John the Baptist was a middleman. He pointed back to Isaiah and forward to Jesus, connecting the whole plan. What or who are the "middlemen" who connect you with God? In what way are you a middleman?

2.     John saw "the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him."  Compare and contrast this baptism scene with the Spirit hovering over the waters in Genesis 1:1. Does the Spirit ever "tear open" the barriers you create in order to tell you things?  Explain.

Oremus pro invicem
(Let us pray for one another)

He saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.  And a voice came from the heavens saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

John baptized Jesus with water.

God's Spirit broke through Earth's boundaries,
gushed into the world of time,
told our universe again
that

God is with us.

Spirit,
tear open
 the heavens.
 Break through our
boundaries set-in-stone,
and descend into the depths
 of our hearts.

Pour rivers of grace on all of us.

Amen

God "dwells in us."
God's love is not meant for us alone;
we must give it away.

Do small things today and for many tomorrows,
with a generous heart.

Give God Away Today!
Help us then, Lord,
to be so united with the paschal mystery of Jesus,
that through Him the world can become a better place to dwell.
You promise us much for this life
and for our eternal presence with You;
may we live into that promise
each day.

An interesting thought:

The birth of St. John is celebrated on June 24th, in the moment of the summer solstice. From that point onward, daylight begins to reduce. On the other hand, the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ is celebrated on December 25th, during the winter solstice. From that point onward, daylight begins to grow, to get longer.
