Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day - Wayne County will be holding a hazardous waste collection day in Westland on Saturday, August 16 at the Westland Shopping Center parking lot behind JC Penny. Collection will run between 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Examples of acceptable items include : Household paints, stains, dyes, Floor wax, floor care products, carpet cleaner, Furniture polish, bathroom cleaners, stain removers, solvents, Pharmaceutical Waste (NON-CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES ONLY) Nail polish, glue, Fertilizer, lawn and garden chemicals, pesticides, Antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, Automotive batteries and dry cell batteries, fluorescent bulbs (all types), Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, Mercury thermometers, thermostats and elemental mercury. They will also be allowing electronic recycling of items such as : Computer CPU's, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, Cell phones, fax machines, copiers, and televisions.

Geek the Library - Join the William P. Faust Westland Public Library for their final "Geek the Library" celebration on Saturday, August 16 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event will include games, prizes and refreshments and no sign up is required. The library is located at 6123 Central City Parkway.

Saturdays in the Park - Attention Runners, Walkers, Cyclists, and Skaters: Hines Drive will be Traffic Free this Saturday, August 16, and every Saturday through September 8! Saturday's in the Park have returned to Hines Drive and offers visitors the opportunity to walk, run, skate or cycle safely from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. without the concern of motor vehicle traffic. Hines Drive will be closed from Ann Arbor Trail to Outer Drive. Check out the Wayne County Parks website for more info, or call (734) 261-1990.

Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings. Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location.

- The Disability Concerns Committee will meet on Monday, August 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Friendship Center, located at 1119 Newburgh Rd.

- There will be a meeting of the Westland City Council on Monday, August 18 at 7:00 p.m. inside Council Chambers of Westland City Hall, located at 36601 Ford Rd.

- The Housing Commission will meet on Tuesday, August 19 at 5:30 p.m. at the Dorsey Center, located at 32715 Dorsey.

- There will be a Parks and Recreation Advisory meeting on Tuesday, August 19 at 5:30 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36601 Ford Rd.

Friday Night Movie - The Friday Night Movie returns to the William P. Faust Westland Public Library this week on Friday, August 22. This week's movie will be, "Moon." The movie is about Astronaut Sam Bell who has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet's power problems. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie will start at 7:00 p.m. There will also be trivia, prizes, snacks and refreshments.

Westland Farmer's Market Held Every Thursday - The Westland Farmer's Market will be held from 3 - 7 p.m. every Thursday in the New Famers Market Pavilion, located in Cental City Park. This is the ultimate site for farmers, growers and producers to sell their own products directly to the public. Residents now have the opportunity to catch a FREE ride to the market at the following locations and times. *All times are approximate and dependent on weather, traffic, available space, etc.
