Introductory Message from CEO/President, Lyn Demaret

As the holiday season approaches we are reminded that there are many reasons to be grateful. For some, the list of things is limited due to different reasons - whether it's that they lost a loved one recently and are struggling to pay the bills, unable to get/keep a job to provide food on the table, pay to keep the lights on at night, or another unforeseen emergencies not prepared for.

Remember to be kind, helpful, and pay it forward with a good deed, a kind word, a simple gesture, or a volunteered hour.

This winter season River Cities United Way is asking you to please consider buying one additional item that can be donated to help others struggling.  The following non-profit partners would be ecstatic to have extra non-perishable items to provide those in need: Praise Chapel Food for Families, Bullhead City Meals on Wheels, Colorado River Food Bank, St Vincent de Paul Society in Needles, Volunteers of Golden Shores, Kingman Area Food Bank, Interagency Council Food Bank, St Vincent de Paul Parker, and/or The Salvation Army Lake Havasu Corps.
IMPACT STORY:   Harbor House (Kingman, AZ.)

Johnny was 17 when he entered Harbor House upon a referral from a local church after living in the tunnels in Kingman surviving by panhandling, stealing and pawning items for money, and using the homeless trade system.

While in the Arizona Youth Partnerships' Harbor House program, Johnny received basic needs services such as shelter, food, toiletry items. He also received much needed counseling, and employment services, help preparing for his GED test, employment skill services (how to fill out job applications, write a resume and complete employment interviews), Harbor House purchased clothing and shoes for Johnny to attend interviews and other appointments, aided in getting needed documents such as his birth certificate and Social Security Card.

Eventually, Johnny was placed in a foster home, but was equipped with the tools to find a job. Johnny has since turned 18, and still visits on occasion. He is doing very well and is on the road to self-sufficiency.

Arizona Youth Partnership can be reached at (928) 718-0442 or on the web.
