Halloween Safety
By Lisa Tani, MSW, Forensic Interviewer
Halloween is an evening of fun, costumes and candy. To make sure everyone is safe while trick-or-treating, the National Crime Prevention Council has some great tips for parents on how to keep kids safe on Halloween:
-
Keep your house well lit, inside and out
-
Have older kids go out with a large group of friends and make sure younger kids are accompanied by an adult
-
Remind kids not to enter a stranger's house while trick-or-treating
-
Report any suspicious activity
-
Try to use make-up instead of masks for costumes
-
Check that costumes are flame-retardant to ensure safety around lit pumpkins
-
Have kids wear light colors or put reflective tape on their costumes
-
Remind kids to wait until they are home to eat their treats
-
Check all treats at home in a well-lit area
-
Children should have child-safe flashlights
