Washington, DC Premiere of Flory's Flame, a one-hour documentary weaving the life story of Flory Jagoda into footage of her 2013 Celebration Concert at the Library of Congress.
At 90 years old, Flory Jagoda is the foremost interpreter of Sephardic traditional music in the U.S., and has received the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship from the NEA. Raised in a musical household in Bosnia, she performs songs with roots that go back to the Jewish expulsion from Spain in 1492. Since most of her family was killed during World War II, Flory's life mission has been to continue her family's cultural legacy through their music. Her strength of spirit shines through her challenging but ultimately triumphant story. Flory's Flame includes performances by Flory and 25 fellow musicians in the Library of Congress's Coolidge Auditorium.
This free screening will be held in The Mumford Room, 6th floor, James Madison Building of the Library of Congress, 101 Independence Avenue SE, Washington, DC 20540. RSVP required to [email protected]
Organized by the American Folklife Center at The Library of Congress, the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia to the United States of America, and Jemglo.
FILE UNDER FSGW MEMBER MAKES GOOD:
FSGW Member Dr. Judith Hanna has just published Dancing to Learn: The Brain's Cognition, Emotion, and Movement (Rowman & Littlefield, 2015). In this book, Dr. Hanna, who is an Affiliate Research Professor, Department of Anthropology, University of Maryland, argues that Dance will become increasingly important in the 21st century as way of recharging our stimulus fatigued brains. Dance encourages brain health and plasticity. "The "brain that dances" is changed by it." To learn more, visit
