Adopt-A-Book is coming!!
Beginning Monday, November 17
It's that time of year again!
Adopt-A-Book is the library's annual fundraiser to help build the book collection. An assortment of new fiction and non-fiction releases will be on display for patrons to "adopt" (purchase) for the library. A commemorative book plate will be placed in the book and the adopting patron can be the first to check the book out of the library.
Adopt-A-Book is also the perfect gift for any holiday or occasion. The library will provide a lovely card that you can send to your family members or friends so they will know about the gift given in their name. Also a commemorative book plate will be inscribed with their name and added to the book.
An opening reception will be held on Monday, November 17 at 5:00 pm.

There are also many children's titles included this year.

Learn the healing and calming effects of knitting and crocheting. Socialize with others with the same interest.

Film and Discussion - "The Loving Story"

Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities that uses the power of documentary films to encourage community discussion of America's civil rights history. NEH has partnered with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to develop programmatic and support materials for the sites. New London Maritime Society's program at Public Library of New London is one of 473 institutions across the country awarded a set of films chronicling
the history of the Civil Rights Movement.
THE LOVING STORY
Richard and Mildred Loving were arrested in 1958 for violating Virginia's ban on interracial marriage. Their struggle culminated in a landmark Supreme Court decision,
Loving v. Virginia (1967).

Managing Man, Manure and Money to Improve Water Quality In Long Island Sound

Eastern CT Conservation District (ECCD) will explore the causes of nitrogen over-load in Long Island Sound through a hands-on, minds-on workshop that will be appropriate for all age levels. A watershed model (Enviroscape) will be used to demonstrate from where the sources of nitrogen originate and then workshop participants will learn about best management practices (BMPs) for reducing nitrogen discharge. Participants will be briefed on present ECCD efforts and projects being implemented in the Long Island Sound watershed to reduce nitrogen from discharging into our waterways.

Learn to Shoot and Edit Video For Your Nonprofit or Business with your Smart Phone
Monday, November 3
9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Hands-on training to produce better video with your smart phone. Learn best practices on how to shoot video with either an iPhone
or Android device. Then get training to use the free editing software you
probably already have on your laptop. You'll discover some simple editing
techniques for the free Apple iMovie or Windows Movie Maker. A 30 year
video professional will show you how to shoot the best video with your phone,
and the easiest ways to edit it together. The goal will be helping you produce
video that your organization or business can showcase on its website.
Requirements are an iPhone or Android phone, a laptop with either iMovie
or Windows Movie Maker already installed, and the knowledge to transfer
video from your phone to your laptop. You should also bring the cable
needed for transferring.
All attendees will get to participate in shooting and editing a video.

Supper Book Club - The Game of Kings

This group usually meets the second Monday of the month, from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm. Because of Veterans Day, the meeting is the first Monday this month. Book selections are chosen by members a few months ahead of the meeting date. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk. Each month the club chooses a local restaurant that fits the theme of book, and dinner is ordered to be delivered to the library. Menus are available at the Circulation Desk. Beverages are provided by the library. You may also bring your own supper. Homework Helpers
Mondays Through Thursdays 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Students from Connecticut College will be here in the Children's Room to assist school aged children with homework in all areas of study. This program runs Monday - Thursday, 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm on a drop-in basis. There is no fee for this service and no need to make an appointment.
