Stewardship Update

God blesses us so we can bless others (Genesis 12:2-3) and we thank you for so generously supporting the mission and ministries of Peace UMC.  Below is a summary of our March finance update. The full report can be found on our website at www.peaceumcorlando.org.

The operating budget represents the funds needed to run our facility and support our ministries on a daily basis.  In 2014, Peace UMC operating expenses exceeded contributions by $24,381.  Contributions overall exceeded our budgeted plan, but unfortunately, our expenses exceeded our budget by even more, resulting in a loss for the year.  Staff members, church leadership and the finance committee are taking this situation very seriously and are in the process of reviewing steps to provide a balanced budget.

Due to the faithful gifts and tithes to the operating fund for many years, Peace was able to celebrate the incredible milestone of retiring the facility mortgage at the end of the year.

The SOM (Sustaining Our Mission) funds, separate from our operating budget, are used for a prioritized list of special projects that were required to address overdue facility maintenance items and position us for future growth.  The projects (and costs) have been spread across a three-year period. Visitors and long-time members alike have already had their worship experience enhanced by the improvements in the sanctuary.

The Trustees have addressed many safety concerns throughout the facility.  To date, we have completed over $119,000 in much needed work and reserved over $16,000 to be used for outreach.  Over the three-year period, SOM commitments and pledges total $400,053.  In addition to your SOM pledges, leadership allocated $100,000 from future operating budgets toward these projects. In other words, of the funds used in prior years to pay our mortgage a large portion of these funds have been allocated for the next two years to the SOM campaign. Should there be a perception Peace needs less money now the mortgage is paid, this is absolutely not true. We are depending on your ongoing, regular contributions to meet the critical, needs of PUMC.

Unfortunately, early in 2015, giving patterns are showing signs of declining.  Working together faithfully, we have accomplished much and God has much in store for us in 2015. Your ongoing financial support is needed, and greatly appreciated.  Please feel free to ask questions, offer suggestions, or even attend a Finance committee meeting.

Peace has responded with generosity to the Habitat for Humanity project to help build a house for Brian and Victoria Arndt to the tune of $2,646 (and our Emerging Missions fund has pledged a match to this worthy cause of $5,000, so you still have time to be a part of this effort - visit our website for more details).

Susanna Wesley Circle - March 24

null Susanna Wesley Circle, a UMW Bible Study Circle, will meet Tuesday, March 24 at 9:30 a.m. at Peace UMC. GodSpell - March 27, 28 & 29

The Peace Players of Peace UMC will be performing the musical, Godspell, on Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m., with an additional performance Sunday afternoon on March 29 at 2:00 p.m. Originally created by John-Michael Tebelak, the musical Godspell was based on improvised reenactments of scenes, primarily from the Book of Matthew, and music from traditional hymns.

Godspell was designed as a thought provoking examination of a group of everyday people, brought together by a knowledgeable, loving teacher into a community of believers.  Discovering their common purpose through stories of joy, love, gratitude, judgment and redemption, the group bonds over shared challenges and obstacles as they begin their faith journey.

Under the directorship of Jackie and Ken Shadrake, Godspell will be performed at Peace UMC by a talented cast of musicians, actors and singers.  It is one of the great examples of life imitating art that our cast features familiar faces from all of our different ministries and styles of worship.  So come learn about living good lives.  Come see the formation of a community of believers.  Come sing about love!  And bring some friends along - this is a great opportunity to invite folks to Peace!  Suggested ticket donations are $10.00 to cover production costs, and our children's and youth mission teams will be offering concessions at each performance.

The Way of the Cross (Community Cross Walk) - April 3

On Good Friday, April 3rd, we will be partnering with our friends in Christ at the All Saints Lutheran Church and Iglesia Luterana Cristo Rey in South Chase for a project called "The Way of the Cross" (El Camino de la Cruz).  In order to visibly demonstrate the idea of following the cross for our community, as a group we will carry a cross from All Saints to Peace along the sidewalks of Orange Blossom Trail and Town Center Blvd (approximately 4 miles).

We will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a brief devotion at All Saints on Balcombe Road (near the South Creek library) and end at Peace.  We will use the church bus to ferry people as needed and provide water and help crossing intersections.  This is a community event for all who wish to participate.  For more info contact the church office 407-438-8947 or [email protected]

Simply Relevant: "Chocolate Boutique" - April 15

Simply Relevant is a relational study that encourages new friendships and allows women to discover how relevant God's Word is to our lives today-no matter who you are and where you are in life.  Six sessions guide you in discovering all about God's grace-how richly, extravagantly, and surprisingly he indulges us with his love and grace.  What better metaphor for GRACE is there than CHOCOLATE?  Each month there will be bible lessons for real life, decadent snacks, fun activities, prayer, and girlfriend time.

Simply Relevant will be held the third Wednesday of every month beginning at 6:30 p.m.  April 15, May 20, June 17, July 15 and August 19.  If you liked "HeartSpa" last summer, you're going to love this creative study by the same authors!  To RSVP contact Jana Hart at 407-438-8947 [email protected] (Childcare will be provided)

"Taste and see that the Lord is good."- Psalm 34:8

"WeServe Weekend" - April 18 & 19

The Peace Outreach and Missions Team encourages you to participate in our WeServe Weekend, coming up on Saturday and Sunday, April 18th and 19th.  Sign up for one of our community service projects or get a team together and create one of your own!  This is the Spring edition of our popular SundayServe event from the fall, and we already know we will have the following projects for this session:

  •  Cleaning apartments at the Salvation Army Towers
  •  Visit to local nursing homes
  •  Environmental clean-up projects
  •  HOUSE PAINTING

That's right, we are painting an entire house of a member of the Peace family who needs some help with that project.  See the sign-up sheets on the back table, check out the website, or email Eddie Pipkin directly at [email protected] either to volunteer or to suggest a project YOU would like to be a part of.

"Gift of Life" Ministry Event - April 22

In Matthew 25:40, Jesus says, "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." (NIV)

That leaves us with the challenge to be prayerful about who "the least of these" are in a hurting world.  Out of 200,000 children in India needing heart surgery, only about 5,000 receive it.  This does not include 78,000 infants that die each year of heart defects and disease.  Can we save all of them?  No.  Can we save some of them?  Even saving one child can make a difference in the lives of a family who cannot afford or have access to treatment.

Peace United Methodist Church invites ALL in the community to participate in a pot luck dinner on Wednesday, April 22 from 6:15 pm - 7:45 pm.  Come learn how Ludhiana Christian Medical College Board USA is making a difference in the lives of many children with heart disease.  Medical College and Hospital doctors donate their time and facility.  They need our help for the supplies.

Bring an Indian, International or American dish to share - or just come with a big appetite to eat and learn more about this program from Rev. Roberta K. Jones.  Rev. Jones has done extensive work with the United Methodist Committee on Relief, as well as her long connection to the Ludhiana Medical College.  In addition to her travels to India, she also served as a missionary to Korea and Taiwan, and led volunteer teams to Sierra Leone, West Africa.  This event is sponsored by Peace United Methodist Women.

Youth Dinner & Silent Auction - April 24

On Friday, April 24 at 6:00 p.m., the Student Ministry of Peace United Methodist Church will be hosting their annual Dinner & Silent Auction. We are asking for donations of NEW merchandise and/or gift cards and certificates that we can auction at our event.  We're also in need volunteers to assist with cooking, set-up and decorating.  Any help that you can provide would be deeply appreciated!

This is a great opportunity to participate in a meaningful way in the lives of the young people in our church community and to assist in the mission work that will take place this summer.  All items can be brought to the church office throughout the week (Monday -Thursday from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 or Fridays from  8:30 a.m. - Noon) or dropped off with a church staff member on Sundays.  Thank you for your support!  To volunteer contact Bonnie White at [email protected].  For more information about our Youth program, please go to our website: www.peaceyouth.net.
