JOIN THE TRADITIONS THIS NOVEMBER!

Every November, Mexican families gather together to celebrate the lives of their deceased loved ones during Day of the Dead. On November 8 and 9, your family can discover the wealth of authentic cultural activities celebrating life at Harbourfront Centre's Day of the Dead festival, presented by Scotiabank.

The Natrel Rink is one of the most scenic places to skate in the city. The season opens mid-month when the temperatures are just right and skate rentals are always available. New to skating? Why not take a four-week class with Learn to Skate, generously supported by RBC Learn to Play. With classes for every skill level, it's easy to find your stride.

If you're a dance fan, you'll be happy to know that NextSteps is back in full swing. Don't miss Toronto Dance Theatre's Triple Bill (November 4-8). Later in the month, Ballet Creole returns with the holiday classic, Soulful Messiah (November 28-29). It's become a Harbourfront Centre holiday tradition you won't want to miss.

AFTERNOON TEA AT IRON ROSE TEA GALLERY

A Waterfront Social!
Stick out that little finger and put your hat on or not! Iron Rose Tea Gallery is a quaint oasis amongst construction and is offering Afternoon Tea.

Served on weekends from 2:00 to 5:30pm, on a first-come, first-served basis, join them starting November 1. Despite the modest price, only $13.50, the delicate spread includes delectable scones or bread puddings, dainty finger sandwiches and divine deserts.
Wash it all down with one of their 37 types of loose leaf tea. Anyone with gluten or lactose intolerance, please call in advance at 1-647-352-8110.

Iron Rose Tea Gallery opened their doors a year ago. Their aim was to create a place where residents and guests of the Waterfront area could enjoy high quality product without the high price tag. The ambiance is very different from what people experience in the big corporate chain coffee and tea houses. Besides a wide variety of delectable teas and coffees, they also offer ice cream, French pastries, home-made soups and sandwiches and last, but not least, art pieces by local artists.

With the holiday season approaching, everyone can find an appropriate gift for their loved ones, from one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces by local artists to handmade scarves, photography, boxed collections of teas and tea accessories, custom made baskets and more.

Enjoy an evening of storytelling with Reneltta Arluk as she reads from her new book Thoughts and Other Human Tendencies, held on Friday November 14 from 7:00 - 8:30pm.

This collage of poetry explores relations and culture from the perspective of a young Aboriginal woman finding her passions, and the snippets of joy and pain that comes from the experience. The reading will be followed by a Q&A session with the author.

Reneltta is of Inuvialuit, Gwich'in and Chipewyan-Cree descent originally from Fort Smith, North West Territories. FINAL CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON BILLY BISHOP TORONTO CITY AIRPORT PEDESTRIAN TUNNEL

Travel into and out of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (BBTCA) is about to get even easier with the airport's new pedestrian tunnel just months away from its opening, in early 2015.

The complete journey through the tunnel to the island-side of the airport will take only six minutes, providing BBTCA travellers convenient, predictable and reliable access to Canada's 9th busiest airport.

Final phases of the tunnel have now begun, including the installation of moving walkways, escalators and elevators, an innovative digital advertising platform, and final finishing work on the electrical and landscaping. The tunnel, which is being built at no cost to taxpayers, will be the only fully pedestrian, underwater tunnel in the world that connects travellers from a mainland to an island airport.

UP EXPRESS TO LAUNCH CANADA'S FIRST DEDICATED AIRPORT EXPRESS RAIL SERVICE

In the spring of 2015, Union Pearson Express (UP Express) will launch as Canada's first dedicated airport express rail service, connecting Toronto's downtown core to Toronto Pearson International Airport. UP Express will provide a fast routetaking only 25 minutes each way and departing every 15 minutes, 19 hours a day. There has been significant progress on the corridor, tracks and stations, with many residents now seeing the project come to life as it nears completion.

In mid August, after a 20,000 kilometre journey, we welcomed the first two UP Express trains to Toronto. Built by Nippon Sharyo in Japan, these  state-of-the art trains were shipped in from Toyokawa, Japan to Savannah, Georgia and then on to Rochelle, Illinois where Nippon Sharyo's plant is assembling and testing the train cars under Metrolinx's stewardship. The remaining trains will be arriving on a cascading basis over the coming months.

Before arriving in Toronto, the first two trains underwent high and low speed testing on Chicago's Metra Line and are now undergoing a comprehensive testing and commissioning program in Toronto. Starting in September, the first two trains began testing on a variety of GO corridors and the Spur into terminal 1 at Toronto Pearson. Over the coming months, you will be seeing many UP Express trains on the GO corridors from now until the launch next spring.

Follow them at @UPexpress and remember to #Trackthetrains.

GIVE YOUR BODY A BOOST WITH VITA-PLUS

Winter is just around the corner, signifying the arrival of the dreaded cold and flu season. For some of us, it may mean getting a flu shot, but how about thinking of ways to fortify and boost our immune system naturally?

Two supplements you should take daily are omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D3. Omega-3's act as immune boosters by increasing the activity of white blood cells that eat up bacteria, while vitamin D3 stimulates the production of proteins that act like natural antibiotics. Deficiency of vitamin D3 encourages infections, inflammation and immune system suppression. From astragalus to zinc, there are many more supplements that will help strengthen your body from the cold that is to come.

With 15 years of industry knowledge and over 700 natural health products to choose from, visit Vita-Plus to see how they can help you through the winter season and give your immune system a boost.

Fashion can be frustrating when it comes to coordinating what you wear with each season. However, Vivah Jewellery's Tree of Life collection will make sure you are always wearing the perfect piece of jewellery, no matter what season it is.

The Tree of Life is a symbol that has been around for centuries. In fact it is one of the most common forms of jewellery that has been worn throughout the ages.

It signifies a diverse range of qualities, representing a symbol of love, wisdom, renaissance, strength, redemption, relationship, abundance and encouragement. It also represents what we aspire to be in life, as well as our journey and growth to acquire all our desires. Spread your arms like a tree and embrace the world, all while being strong and grounded like a tree's roots.

Their beautifully hand-crafted, sterling silver Tree of Life collection provides earthy elegance that will last you a lifetime. It is the perfect habitual gift for yourself or a meaningful and inspiring present to show someone else how much you care about them.

SHOP THE
NEIGHBOURHOOD REMINDS US TO SHOP LOCAL

There are more than one million small businesses in Canada that employ close to half of the country's workforce. In today's global marketplace, with its myriad of online-shopping choices that are just a mouse click away, it's easy to forget about the positive impacts that our dollars have when we spend them at retailers in our own communities, whether it's at a store that makes handmade chocolates, natural skin-care products or microbrewed beer, or at an independent bookstore.

Shop The Neighbourhood is a free initiative by Yellow Pages that aims to raise awareness of the important role that small businesses play in creating healthy, thriving neighbourhoods. Special events marking this campaign will take place on Saturday, November 29, in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver.

It's important to note that Shop The Neighbourhood is more than just a single day of recognition for the economic treasures that our small businesses are. During the six weeks leading up to Nov. 29, an awareness campaign promotes the positive impacts of supporting small businesses and shopping locally. This will be capped off with a day in which residents are officially encouraged to make a local purchase at a participating business and take advantage of exclusive event-day deals.

"Our Shop The Neighbourhood initiative is a reminder to all Canadians of how important it is to support local businesses as the impacts of that support extend to the hearts of our communities," says Franois Ramsay, senior vice-president, corporate affairs at Yellow Pages. "On November 29 this year, show your support for neighbourhood businesses by making a local purchase."

To participate in Shop The Neighbourhood as a business or a shopper, visit www.shoptheneighbourhood.ca.

MAJOR QUEENS QUAY CONSTRUCTION MILESTONE

Streetcar service resumed over the Thanksgiving weekend marking a major construction milestone for the Queens Quay revitalization project. The newly rebuilt streetcar corridor and tracks include new underground chambers for the streetcar's electrical needs, as well as new cantilevered poles for overhead wiring. The platforms have been widened to meet new accessibility requirements and include passenger amenities such as ticket vending machines.

The construction of TTC infrastructure is only one part of the massive Queens Quay revitalization project, which is on schedule for summer 2015. With less than a year of construction remaining, Queens Quay's new landscape features are emerging across the 1.7 km site.

  • Crews are installing more than two million pieces of granite by hand for the pedestrian promenade, which is about three times the width of a normal city sidewalk.
  • Construction of the Martin Goodman Trail is underway and will give cyclists a much-needed, separated bike route through the central waterfront.
  • As crews build the promenade and Martin Goodman Trail, they are excavating approximately two metres below ground to install soil cells that will help Queens Quay's double row of trees grow quickly and stay healthy in order to create a green canopy.
  • In total, more than 240 new trees are being planted on Queens Quay. Some tree planting occurred last spring but the majority will occur in spring 2015.
  • The new asphalt roadway for the street's realigned traffic lanes is underway and granite laybys have been built to accommodate on-street parking. Traffic will continue to be one-way on Queens Quay until the project is complete and the road and signals are commissioned next spring.
Most of the waterfront's aging underground infrastructure has also been expanded or rebuilt as part of this project. Click here for a detailed Queens Quay Construction Progress Report.
