A Message From Executive Director William Salcedo
|
Dear Friends,
I hope that you are enjoying this beautiful summer! For many of us, we are busy getting together with family and friends, planning barbeques, and taking trips. Unfortunately, the children we serve don't always have summers filled with fun activities and vacations.
Thankfully, our dedicated volunteers continue to fulfill their commitment as Big Brothers and Big Sisters throughout the summer months! This summer our matches have been on some great outings, and the creative activities they come up with continue to amaze us.
This month we wanted to focus on the foundation of our program - the day to day mentoring that takes place here at BBBS. I hope you enjoy reading about some of the great things our matches have recently experienced throughout our community!
Sincerely,
William Salcedo
Executive Director

| Little Sister Caitlin & Big Sister Sandra at Grounds for Sculpture
|
Bigs and Littles came up with some great ideas for activities to enjoy this summer that are low-cost, educational, cultural, healthy, community-centered and fun! Big Sister Sandra and Little Sister Caitlin have been matched for 18 months and they recently visited Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. It is a 42-acre sculpture park and museum that is located on the former site of the New Jersey State Fairgrounds. Prior to this outing, Sandra had taken some books out of the library so they could look at some of the paintings Seward Johnson used to create his sculptures. As Sandra and Caitlin strolled through the park and discussed all the different types of sculptures, they were able to check out Seward Johnson's sculpture titled "Out of the Frame." Caitlin shared "It was really interesting. It was just cool to see all these sculptures from paintings come to life."

| Little Sister HayLee with her Big Sister Ann at the BBBS Atlantic Club Pool Party
|
Recently our Bigs, Littles, and children waiting to be matched got to enjoy The Atlantic Club Pool Party! Each year, The Atlantic Club generously hosts this party and provides dinner and dessert for our group. We had 60 people attend this year including several of our new matches, which is always nice for our staff to see these successful matches in action! The weather was perfect and the kids all had a blast! Thank you to our supporters at The Atlantic Club for providing a safe and fun activity each year for our children and volunteers to enjoy.

| Long Branch students scrub in at Monmouth Medical Center
|
The Beyond School Walls Program in partnership with Monmouth Medical Center will begin its 6th year this fall. In this program, hospital employees serve as volunteer mentors to Long Branch High School students. The matches meet twice a month and along with 1:1 mentoring, the students are exposed to all aspects of the medical field.

Wells Fargo Community Connections Program
Thank you to the Wells Fargo Community Connections Program for supporting BBBSMMC and many other local charities. Each year Wells Fargo hosts a breakfast to present the non-profit organizations with a donation and gives each agency a chance to give a short synopsis of their cause to the entire group. It's always uplifting to hear about the wonderful work being done in the community that addresses many important needs and issues.

Big Brother Al and Little Brother John have been getting together nearly every other Saturday for the past 5 years! They spend their time fishing, biking, and playing baseball and basketball together. Even though John loves playing video games and Al is an outdoor enthusiast, the two share common ground with fishing and playing sports.
Recently Al compromised his position on gaming and shared an outing at the Silver Bullet Pinball Museum with John. John will be entering 7th grade this fall and is on the baseball team. Al looks forward to attending some of his Little Brother's baseball games and will continue to encourage him academically. Every time you ask John, "How would you rate Al on a scale from 1 to 10?" we get the same response: "A ten because he's fun."

A Little Life is Waiting for a Big Change
|
Last month we featured Nadale as our waiting Little in our newsletter and we have since found him a Big Brother and plan to match him within the next few weeks! Now we would like to focus on Nadale's younger brother Naran who is waiting to be matched with a Big Brother.
Naran is 11 years old and will be entering the sixth grade this fall. He is a talkative boy with a good sense of humor and is very excited about the possibility of having a Big Brother of his own. Some activities he would like to do with his Big include going to sporting events, playing sports and laser tag, riding go-karts, and paintballing.
