CAWA Supports Fed Up at the Pump Coalition - No New Gas Tax
A coalition of business owners, employees, consumers and advocates - known as Fed Up at the Pump - is educating and informing California motorists about a state-agency mandated gas and diesel price hike that will have a negative impact on their pocketbooks, the economy and business generally. Starting Jan. 1, 2015, Californians will pay an estimated 15 cents or more per gallon of gas as a result of a "hidden tax" created by the California Air Resources Board "Fuels Under the Cap" regulations. According to the Board of Equalization, California consumers currently pay 71 cents per gallon in taxes every time they fill up their tanks, which is the highest gas tax rate in the country. The average American pays less - about 50 cents per gallon. For more information go to: www.fedupatthepump.org  or contact CAWA's Director of Government Affairs, Jennifer Zins at [email protected] or 916.871.0603.
Governor Signs Law Mandating Paid Sick Leave for Temporary, Seasonal and Part time Employees
This bill specifically requires employers to provide paid sick leave to employees who work 30 or more days within a year from commencement of employment and employees will earn a minimum of one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. With the Governor's signature, California becomes only the second state in the nation to require paid sick leave. The Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 will go into effect July 1, 2015. Members should stay tuned for further guidance from CAWA and contact our Director of Government Affairs, Jennifer Zins at [email protected] or 916.871.0603.
