Coalition Statement on Student Success Act, Amendments
|
In today's economy every student needs to have a strong foundation in the science, technology, engin eering, and math (STEM) subjects in order to land and succeed in virtually any job. Only 45 percent of U.S. high school graduates are ready for college work in math and only 30 percent are ready in science. This is unacceptable and should be addressed in the landmark federal K-12 education law.

The White House is threatening to veto a Republican bill to fix the widely criticized No Child Left Behind law that is set for de bate in the House on Wednesday, calling it "a significant step backwards. "Republicans say the bill would restore local control in schools and stop top-down education mandates. Democrats say it would allow billions in federal dollars to flow out without ensuring they will improve student learning.

Despite Hiccups, House Nearing the Finish Line In NCLB Rewrite Debate
Education Week
The House adjourned late last evening before it was able to finalize consideration of a laundry list of a mendments filed to a Republican-backed rewrite of the No Child Left Behind Act.Working late into the night, lawmakers adopted more than a dozen of the 44 amendments filed to the federal K-12 overhaul, including a measure that would allow school districts to use locally designed tests in lieu of state tests.

Arne Duncan blasts House effort to revise No Child Left Behind
The Washington Post
Education Secretary Arne Duncan is blasting House Republicans' effort to re  write the federal No Child Left Behind law, saying that the bill - which is expected to pass easily along party lines - would be "devastating" for minority children in the nation's poorest schools and school districts. | Lawmakers File Amendments Ahead of House Debate to Overhaul NCLB
Education Week
The U.S. House of Representatives is slated to begin debating a Republican-backed rewrite of the No Child Left Behind Act on Wednesday, with final passage expected Friday afternoon. Ahead of the three-day debate, lawmakers submitted more than 100 amendments they plan to offer in hopes of altering the bill more to their liking.

Dow and Project Lead The Way Partner to Grow STEM Skills in Key Dow Communities
To kick off national Engineers Week, The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW) and Project Lead The Way (PLTW) announced a significant partnership to increase K-12 students' access to high-quality science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education programs. Through a $400,000 commitment, Dow will fund PLTW programs in 17 schools in Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. These 17 schools enroll more than 14,000 students, and about half of these students are minority students.
