WHY I WALK TO END HIV

Today I went to our Buchanan Memorial Chapel at MCCDC to pray. The columbarium is a vivid reminder of why I'm joining team MCCDC this Saturday for the Walk to End HIV. I visited each niche and prayed for each name, grateful for the legacy of church, friends and family that remember each of these saints. I noted that many of these saints lived and died with AIDS.

I walk for our saints.

I also walk for those living with HIV today. There have been many advances in research and treatment in recent years. I walk to help support continued research. The end of HIV is on the horizon. Every step gets us closer. Every step counts. I walk to do my part in getting us closer.

I walk because if Washington, D.C. was a country, it would rank No. 23 of the 50 countries with the highest HIV rates.  It is estimated that up to one-third of those living with HIV do not know they are HIV-positive. The walk helps fund accessible testing and helps to get the word out to get tested now.

I walk in memory of John Raymer. Shortly before my beloved partner died of AIDS on June 6, 1996, he said to me, "Just promise me you'll always remember me. Promise me you will say my name out loud from time to time." I often say his name out loud and in my heart, and this Saturday when the walk kicks off I will say out loud, "John Raymer, I'm walking for you." And I know in a way beyond my limited understanding he will be there, walking in spirit, as he couldn't do during the final weeks of his life when he was confined to bed.

I walk with Team MCCDC because I believe God is greater than HIV. It is important that we walk as a faith community. It is an opportunity for us to let our community know that MCCDC is the place to be for those seeking spiritual support and friendship for their HIV journey. Those living with HIV can find a spiritual home at MCCDC, a place where there is no stigma attached to the diagnosis.

See you Saturday at the Walk to End HIV. There is still time to register and join Team MCCDC now at www.aidswalkwasington.org Be sure to scroll down to sign-on with MCCDC.

If you are not able to walk in person due to schedule or health reasons, you can still be a part of Team MCCDC as a Sleep Walker. Just register at the link above.

Walking together, we WILL end HIV with God's help.

Faithfully,

Rev. Dwayne

Nosotros somos ICMDC Unid@s!

Adoremos y Alabemos a Dios!

On Saturday, October 25, Unid@s, the MCCDC Hispanic/Latin@ outreach ministry, will once again hold its monthly worship service at 6pm in the sanctuary here at MCCDC. We will have wonderful music, liturgy, great food and fellowship. Rev. Alberto Njera will be our celebrant and preacher who will deliver Jesus' Good News of radically inclusive love. This will be a special service as we will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15).

The service will be mostly in Spanish; however, the Scripture readings and the sermon are usually translated into English.  So whether or not you are a Spanish speaker, please come and celebrate this joyous occasion with us! For more information, contact Tom Simmons, Ministry Intern, at frybreadguy51@gmail.com or (202) 638-7373.

MCC STATEMENT

OF FAITH REPORT

The report presents the results of the first round of surveys developed by the Commission on the MCC Statement of Faith. Along with feedback forms on the MCC denominational website, the surveys were launched with the intention of initiating a grass-roots dialogue with the various constituencies of MCC as we begin our task: to review, renew, and update our MCC Statement of Faith as authorized by the 2013 General Conference.

MCCDC is sponsoring a group to attend

"Taking Church to the Community Conference"

Saturday, November 1, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Wesley Theological Seminary

No longer can we simply ask, "What can we do to get people to come to our church?" We must also consider, "How can we go into the world to encounter those in need of the gospel?" At Taking Church to the Community, you will explore strategies your congregation can use to reach beyond its walls with worship, community events, ministries, and service - meeting community members where they are and moving them toward discipleship.

Taking Church to the Community is ecumenical and designed for both laity and clergy.

Presentations and Workshops

  • The Outside-in Church
  • Go Where the People Are
  • Becoming an Interactive Congregation
  • Blessing Your Community
  • Discipleship 101: Getting Ready
  • Ministries and Community Engagement: Heading Out!
  • Reaching Out through Community Events

If you would like to attend, please contact Rev Cathy Alexander by October 21st  at revcathy@mccdc.com or 202-638-7373.
