Dear SGF Supporters,
What a week!  We hope that you didn't fare too badly in the storms and wanted to provide you with an update.
DELIVERANCE

After the one-two punch of Tropical Storm Fay and Hurricane Gonzalo, our Deliverance looked more like how we imagine Sea Venture. But luckily, this was a case of looks being deceiving. Although Deliverance did lose her mainmast and mizzenmast and all their rigging, they fell in a most fortunate fashion, missing the replica ship almost altogether. Damage on the upper decks and outer areas was minimal, and there appears to be no structural damage below decks whatsoever.

The fallen masts have now been discarded but the crow's nest, rigging, fittings and any other useful parts have been saved, much like the Sea Venture castaways salvaged what they could from their wrecked vessel. Deliverance has now REOPENED to visitors (yay!), with FREE admission to the main deck area only while repairs to the stern, below decks, and other areas are being safely carried out.  (To see more photos of Deliverance, visit our Facebook photo album.)

Obviously this means we now have some unexpected expenses, so any support you can provide by becoming a member, supporting our 'Haunted History' fundraiser, or making a donation is most appreciated!

***

It takes a lot to ensure this 40 year old replica ship, stays 'afloat'... So at a time when we could have lost her, we want to send appreciation to everyone that helps us keep Deliverance going as a St. George's icon. So thanks to:
  • Our long-time Deliverance sponsor, Bank of Bermuda Foundation.
  • The ACE Foundation, who've joined this year as a Deliverance supporter.
  • MR Construction has been great with our restoration upgrades,
  • BELCO donated a wooden pole and volunteer Sanders Frith-Brown who is crafting this into a yardarm (in addition to the others he built!)
  • Correia Construction who helped us with a crane
  • Our member, Shawn Lea Benevides, who donated funds for new flags after seeing a Facebook post- we'll have them flying again soon.... and other individuals who've donated over the years.
  • Our many volunteers, including Bobby Mello and Board Member Henry Hayward, who give up TONS of time to ensure Deliverance is at her best
  • The Prison Farm Outreach Programme that partnered with SGF to send us manpower
  • Staff member Gerry Weldon who mans the desk!

What an incredible ship's crew we have!

(Current Deliverance hours are Monday to Thursday and Saturday 10am-2pm.)
WORLD HERITAGE CENTRE
Charlotte, Kristin and Nancy prepare, but Char's still a lil' nervous!

Unlike Deliverance, World Heritage Centre had absolutely no damage, and nary a leak during the storms.  We prepared by carefully wrapping our paintings, exhibits and electronics. And, the day before Gonzalo, Charlotte, her husband Andrew, and our facility caretaker Mr. Rochester put some battens on all of the windows.  But of course, it was the investment into much-needed roof repairs earlier this year that paid off most of all!
(World Heritage Centre and Second Hand Rose are open from Monday - Saturday from 10am-2pm)
HauntedHistory
HAUNTED HISTORY - POSTPONED

We've decided to postpone our Haunted History fundraiser, as we've lost so much time over the last two weeks to storm prep and recovery.  In order to avoid conflicting as much as possible with other major local events, we've chosen Saturday, November 22 as our new date.  So.. not as Halloween-y, but still very much a spooky night celebrating Olde Towne ghost stories, with great food, drinks, music, games, prizes, and fun surprises!

It's going to be super-fun (we promise!) and we really REALLY need your support to make this event a success... so BUY YOUR TICKETS online at www.bdatix.bm , at the World Heritage Centre in St. George's or at GiMi on Front Street, Hamilton.  Email Kristin if you have any questions about the event and to find out about group rates.

2014 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
A HUGE thank you to the 112 folks that have sent in their membership forms so far!  Our Development Director spent her post-Gonzalo days without electricity stuffing envelopes with thank you notes and membership cards, so you should be receiving yours shortly.  We can't say enough how much your support means to us...  Thank you, thank you thank you!

We hope that more of you will sign up to be 2014/15 SGF Members.  You can do so online, or download this form to send in with a cheque or credit card info.   (And, for some Fun with Math, if you are planning to attend Haunted History, paying for 2 non-member tickets is the same as paying for 2 member tickets plus a Turkey Hill membership!  Check that out...)
