SUS NEWS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & OPPORTUNITIES
June 4, 2014

Last week, over 300 individuals, family members, and staff gathered to cheer on athletes with intellectual/developmental disabilities from SUS residences and day programs at the 4th Annual SUS Olympics at Astoria Park in Queens. The day kicked off with a morning stretch and an opening ceremony march around the track, followed by activities throughout the day including track and field races, basketball, softball, soccer, and hoola hoop competitions as well as arts and crafts. The day stood as a testament to the potential of these individuals to excel in whatever it is they may dream of achieving. Last month, middle and high school students from Avenues The World School joined individuals with intellectual/ developmental disabilities to beautify the neighborhood around one of SUS' residences in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. The residence, which hosts one of SUS' largest urban farms, provides supportive housing to 50 formerly homeless individuals with mental illness. Together, the volunteers collected trash, aerated the soil, spread mulch, and painted and secured picket fences around the street trees that have been adopted by SUS' local urban farmers. SUS Presents at ABAI 40th Annual Conference

Last week, SUS was proud to present at the 40th Annual ABAI Conference in Chicago, the premiere conference in the field of Behavior Analysis. SUS' Behavior Intervention Specialists joined the nearly 10,000 practitioners, educators and administrators at the conference who shared cutting-edge research on the treatment of individuals with Autism and other developmental disabilities. SUS' Chief Operating Officer and SUS' Director of Behavior Services organized a panel discussion on how emerging laws and regulations that will go into effect in New York State July 1 will impact the practice of Applied Behavior Analysis. This was SUS' second year of participation in this prestigious event.

The Robin Hood Foundation has renewed SUS' grant for continued support of our Veterans Services. The grant of $250,000 will allow SUS to integrate and streamline mental health, wellness, employment, and homelessness prevention services to veterans.  In the past year, through the contributions of Robin Hood, the number of veterans that SUS has helped to find a home and secure employment has increased. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Robin Hood in the coming year. Read More

SUS Hosts Community Fairs in Brooklyn and the Bronx

In May, SUS hosted two resource fairs to bolster SUS' visibility in communities in Brooklyn and the Bronx. On May 22, SUS hosted a community fair in Brownsville, Brooklyn in advance of the opening of a supportive and affordable housing apartment complex. We also hosted a similar fair in Bedford Park, Bronx. The events offered opportunities for local residents to meet with SUS and other potential employers, learn about available SUS low-income housing, participate in resume writing and interview skills workshops, and receive information related to healthy living.
