Dear ,

I just wanted to update everyone on the latest news we have from Borongan, Philippines after typhoon Hagupit made landfall about 30 miles north of Borongan. First, are friends in Borongan are safe.

There was some damage in Borongan. Electricity is out until next week. Most of the damage is in the villages and communities up stream. There are a variety of international groups helping at the moment. The hospital in Borongan is the central point for emergency and surgical procedures. Marlie is doing screenings on the effected villages. There are some people identified as patients for our mission. Patient evaluation will continue in the coming weeks. Obviously the typhoon has impacted the type of patients we could see. Marlie will advise us as they gather the data. She is preparing a list of medical needs. I suspect we will need to help purchase supplies that will be used above and beyond the normal need for the mission.

The Oikos Sisters are also safe. For those who are familiar with the Sister's Providence House that's where the Sister and kids evacuated during the typhoon. They were in the upstairs area of the house. The water rose up to the second stair from the upstairs area. That's about 8 feet of water on the first room. Imagine your house with 8 feet of water flowing through it. As Sr. Clarissa said,"Even though we may have lost almost everything, "Jesus's Christmas gift to us is our lives". How many of us could have that outlook?

As the next few weeks move ahead we will learn more. Our mission is going forward as planned. The parameters will change somewhat as a result of the typhoon. As we learn more we will adjust accordingly. The thing to remember mission is flexible. We look at it with abundance and opportunity to challenge ourselves to new growth. With our brothers and sisters in Borongan we assist those in need and see God in the work we do.

Father Donald Kenny

In your prayers, please remember Father Donald Kenny who passed from this life on December 9, 2014.

Donald Kenny was born on March 30, 1933 in Chicago to John Joseph Kenny and Catherine Hurley Kenny, and was baptized at St. Gall Church in Chicago. He was educated at St. Leo Elementary School and St. Leo High School in Chicago; Iona College in New Rochelle, New York; St. John University in New York City.

For eight years,  Donald Kenny served as a member of the Christian Brothers of Ireland until 1959. After a brief stay with the Franciscans, he requested permission to study for the diocesan priesthood.

Having completed his studies at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Donald Kenny was ordained to the priesthood on May 28, 1966 by Bishop Romeo Blanchette at the Cathedral of St. Raymond and was assigned to St. Alexander Parish in Villa Park.  Subsequent assignments were at St. Isaac Jogues Parish in Hinsdale (1970) and St. Michael Parish in Wheaton (1974).

Father Kenny was named pastor of St. Andrew Parish in Romeoville (1975); St. Mary Parish in Downers Grove (1982) and St. Thomas Parish in Naperville (1994).

After his retirement in June of 2002, Father Kenny responded to a desire to serve the poor as a missionary. He contacted the St. James Society, and, although not a member, he served with the Society first in Bolivia, then in Ecuador until his return to the United States in June of 2014.

The body of Father Kenny will lie in state on Sunday, December 14, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Church in Naperville, and again on Monday, December 15, 2014 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:50 a.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 15, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Church in Naperville.  Priests wishing to concelebrate are asked to bring an alb and the diocesan white stole. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery in Wheaton.
