Making Lefse is a tradition that is deeply rooted in many of our congregations. Here, the Lefse League at Concordia, Superior, lets us sneak a peek at the process!

This week in the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin-ELCA

Week of October 19, 2014

We are a church that is deeply rooted--and always being made new.

Our roots are in Scripture, tradition and the Lutheran Confessions, as well as in the vibrant communities and rich histories of our congregations. These roots are an ongoing source of nourishment; they enable us to be a church guided by the Holy Spirit that is both resilient and always being reformed.

This week the synod staff will pray for:

Military chaplains currently serving around the world.

Seminarians from our synod who are in the ELCA candidacy process.

All whose lives have been affected by suicide, especially those individuals who work to raise awareness of suicide prevention and the issues that lead to suicidal behavior.

We invite you to include them in your prayers this week as well.

Deeply rooted, and always being made new

Steeple Repair Project

The tall, century-old steeple of the South Beef River church is a landmark noticed by many who travel south of Osseo on I-94. Two years ago, people started to notice that it was leaning. In fact, it was leaning 11 inches in an east-southeasterly direction. An investigation revealed that the base of the southeast 8 inch square wooden column at the basement was weakened by rot and that the same column and nearby beams at the level of the bell floor had been nearly eliminated by rot as the picture (left) shows.

The basement problem had been caused by repeated flooding. The very significant damage at the upper level was caused by heavy water invasion due to incompetent re-shingling, very leaky windows, and completely incompetent tuck-pointing of the brickwork.

The internal structure of the steeple has now been replaced with a new structural system, the shingles have been replaced, and the brick have been replaced or repointed. The steeple will always lean toward Jerusalem, a slight bow to the geographic source of our faith, but it should be stable for many years to come. So this is what the church looks like today (below).

Thanks to Jim Christenson for sharing these photos and story.

Being Made New: Don Moats and Dave Dobbs began the task of removing a wall in the synod office this week. The staff is looking forward to having a little more elbow room!

Time for Change (when you change your time) Sunday, November 2

As the ELCA Malaria Campaign draws to a close, our synod is $29,000 short of reaching our $300,000 financial goal and 66 congregations short of reaching our 100% participation goal. However, it's not too late!

November 2 is All Saints Sunday. What better time to dedicate effort to fighting Malaria-a preventable and curable disease that continues to take one life every minute in Malawi and other parts of the world? That's right. Every minute a person-often a young child or pregnant woman-dies from Malaria. You can help by supporting the ELCA Malaria Campaign.

Here's a fun and easy idea to get started:

  • During worship November 2, light one candle per minute or ring a chime every minute (or do both) to represent the person who died that very minute from Malaria.
  • Use a special litany (that will be available soon from John Sutherland) to call attention to and pray for victims of Malaria.
  • Set a goal for your congregation. What a difference it could make if every congregation donated $1 for every minute of worship November 2!
  • Collect a noisy offering (pocket change in cans) to call attention to the "Time for Change" theme.

Whatever you do, please get involved and send your gifts to the synod office with the notation "Malaria Campaign."

And remember to set your clocks back November 2!
