I have been in New Mexico sharing your gratitude with reproductive health, rights, and justice leaders. I've met the staffs of Southwestern Women's Options, the University of New Mexico Center for Reproductive Health, faith leaders in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and our amazing coalition partners who worked to defeat a local referendum banning abortions in Albuquerque after 20 weeks with no exceptions.

 

Our friends at the NM RCRC have also been heavily promoting the "It's Time" campaign, encouraging people of faith to talk about religion, abortion, sexuality, and justice. Here's the link to find out more about the It's Time campaign 

The potluck with clinic escorts and folks who open their homes to women who would otherwise have to pay for hotel rooms when seeking treatment will undoubtedly be a highlight of my year. It left my soul singing. Many thanks to NM RCRC for their amazing work and for terrific NM hospitality! The official state question is "Red or green?" I've learned that I'm a green chile guy.

 

This week also marked the sad anniversary of the adoption of the Hyde Amendment, which prevents any federal tax dollars from going to pay for abortion. On our blog, the Rev. Angela Herrera, associate minister of First Unitarian Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico and advisory council for New Mexico RCRC writes:

 

"Through the Medicaid ban, Hyde targets women and girls of color, especially Black and Latina women, who are disproportionately affected by poverty. Studies have shown that out of every four women who are denied abortion coverage, at least one is forced to give birth. Hyde is an old, bad, racist piece of legislation and it is time for it to go."
