Good Causes

September is "Hunger Action Month"

Did you know that...

...In 2013, the Food Pantry Network of Licking County supplied food for more than 3,600 meals every day, reflecting a 9.79 percent increase in meals from 2012?

This is one of the reasons we continue to have a collect donations at the Welcome Table every week. The needs are not diminishing.

The SNAP CHALLENGE

Seminarian Joanna Samuelson is inviting anyone at UCG who'd like to try to eat for a week on a SNAP budget ($4.50/day), to join her in the SNAP Challenge, Sept. 15-21.  Sign up at the Welcome Table!

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly food stamps) provides monthly benefits to supplement the food budgets of families in need, but in many cases these households still struggle to put food on the table. While it is impossible to fully comprehend the difficult decisions low-income families face, the SNAP Challenge will help raise awareness about the issue of hunger in America and will give you a sense of what life is like for millions of low-income Americans facing hunger.

Freedom School Event--

"Candidates and Issues Town Hall Meeting"

Saturday, Sept. 20th

2-4 PM, Newark Library, 101 W. Main St., Newark

A good chance to dialogue with candidates about where they stand on issues of importance to the community.

Earthkeeping Summit 2014 in Columbus

October 12 and 13th!

Dr. Gregory Hitzhusen, Ohio Interfaith Power and Light Board Chair, says, "The Summit will provide an opportunity to examine the challenges of the energy, climate, and environment work of our time, revisit the moral and ethical foundations of our response and offer resources to equip congregations to fulfill their responsibility for the stewardship of creation."

"Join us for one or both days--meet people from throughout the state who are engaged in earthkeeping: get ideas for your house of worship, share best practices and challenges, and be encouraged by the many faithful actions already underway."

"We're thrilled to have leading climate scientist and communicator, Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, with us on the evening of October 12th. Dr. Hayhoe was recently named to TIME's 2014 list of the 100 most influential people in the world and appeared in the climate change documentary Years of Living Dangerously. She co-authored a book with her husband, a minister, Climate for Change: Global Warming Facts for Faith-based Decisions."

Words from "Blue Heron" by Mary Oliver
(White Pines: Poems & Prose, 1991)

You can
die for it--
an idea,
or the world.  People

have done so,
brilliantly,
letting
their small bodies be bound

to the stake,
creating
an unforgettable
fury of light.  But

This morning,
climbing the familiar hills
in the familiar
fabric of dawn, I thought
. . .
how the sun

blazes
for everyone just
so joyfully
as it rises

under the lashes
of my own eyes, and I thought
I am so many!

What is my name?
