Looking ahead to Autumn

Creativity Works is back from our summer break and as the mornings now turn frosty, much to the chagrin of our office dog, we are looking ahead to the autumn, and to some stimulating, innovative work. I myself spent a couple of weeks over summer delivering a creative learning project in Saudi Arabia, hardly a holiday, but invigorating all the same. Now we are back and have very exciting projects to progress and instigate.

We are currently finalising our plans for Home Service, a project that will be delivered in care home settings both in Radstock and Bristol initially. Home Service is a three year project that we are delivering as part of a South West consortium led by Arts and Health Cornwall and Sicily Isles, and funded by the Baring Foundation and Arts Council England, and we hope to build on this work with Elders and those living with Dementia in the future. It will also inform research, training and development for artists and professionals working in this field through our co|Create programme.

We will also be starting Ways and Means, a project in collaboration with Sirona Health Improvement Service and Bath Locality Learning Disability Service, creating engagement and communication tools for adults with learning difficulties.

We will soon be announcing a new co|Create Manager and with that a revamped, renewed and very exciting new programme of development and training in Socially Engaged Arts. As always, please do get in touch if you would like to keep updated and be involved with any of our work.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Oliver JonesFinancialAdmin

Course Review: Kitchen Creations

Cooking from scratch from fresh, local ingredients.

The Kitchen Creations course which took place from March to July this year in Bath was a great success. A joint project with Second Step, the course allowed participants to learn and experiment with unknown or seldom used ingredients to create quick, tasty, nutritious food that was simple to prepare and inexpensive to buy. Participants were purchasing more fresh ingredients at the end than at the beginning and from discussions throughout the sessions, it was clear that participants were experimenting more with recipes at home than they had been prior to the course. Confidence using knives and general preparation methods were also improved greatly throughout the course - participants became much more adept and faster at preparing their meals.

The course resulted in participants building their confidence and motivation to cook more from scratch, using freshly purchased local ingredients.  It also enabled them to work cooperatively in a group environment and boost their social skills.

Profile: An insight into working with Creativity Works
A Focus on: Lynda, a volunteer with Creativity Works.

What is your connection with Creativity Works?: (e.g. volunteer, participant, artist)

Volunteer

How did you first come across Creativity Works?

I was doing some research on organisations working in the field of arts and health and came across the Creativity Works website. I thought the work of the organisation sounded great. Then when I was looking on a website advertising voluntary opportunities I saw they were looking for volunteers and support in a range of areas.

Which projects have you been involved with?

I started off helping with identifying new funding opportunities. Then I became interested in the evaluation side of their work and involved in the Fresh Art @ Hillview Project to support that part of it. I attended the Steering Group meetings and helped to put in place the evaluation framework for the project, drawing all the different strands together and the findings.

What have you enjoyed the most about working with Creativity Works?

I've enjoyed being involved in a really worthwhile project, which has demonstrated the power of creative activity to have an impact on peoples' lives and wellbeing. I have worked in museums and art galleries for a number of years in the past and it was great to see creative workshops held in museum spaces for therapeutic benefit. Also I liked the fact that the work created would go on to enhance the living spaces at Hillview Lodge (the psychiatric unit at the RUH) and hopefully in some way improve peoples' experience of being there.

I've really enjoyed getting to know staff from Creativity Works and meeting staff from other organisations, artists, volunteers and participants. It has been wonderful to be involved in something that had such momentum and lots of inspiring, passionate people on board.
