2015 is less than a month away and this is a good time for you to start thinking about your annual board retreat. If your board members still haven't decided on a strong topic, we give five suggestions of topics that will prompt meaningful discussions and help to make your retreat a success. 


Speaking of the new year, there are new ACA requirements that are scheduled to take effect in 2015. Large employers - generally those (nonprofit and private) with an equivalent of 50 or more full-time employees - must comply with the employer shared responsibility provision, commonly referred to as the "play or pay" rules. We discuss a few of the basic requirements, along with penalties for noncompliance.

Consider the Success of the ALS's "Ice Bucket Challenge"

  

The ALS Association reported that it raised more than $100 million during a 30-day period, largely as a result of its summer "Ice Bucket Challenge." According to the nonprofit's website, it received $100.9 million in donations from July 29 to Aug. 29 - quite a contrast to the $2.8 million in donations it received during the same period in 2013.


The nonprofit said that more than 3 million donors participated in the fundraising event in which celebrities ranging from Bill Gates and Bill Clinton to Oprah Winfrey...
