Dear library patrons and friends,

The holiday season is here, and the Edgartown Library is very much a part of the town's celebrations. We hope you can drop in for treats at our open house on Dec. 13 -- see details below.

The Friends of the Edgartown Library -- an organization that does so much to support our programs -- has recently sent out its annual appeal letter. If you are able, we hope you will consider supporting this essential group.

From inside the Children's Room of the new library, a view toward the main building.

The library staff had its first tour through the new building on Dec. 4, and it was an impressive experience. Experiencing the actual spaces is so much more useful than reading the architects' drawings. Our visit came on a sunny Thursday mornings, and the light pouring through the new library's clerestory windows was wonderful. Most of the windows are in place now, and very soon the building will be weather-tight for continued work during the cold season ahead. Stay posted by visiting our Facebook page.

Warmly,

Jill Dugas Hughes

Director

Amigos Program Finds
An Enthusiastic Audience

The Amigos program, a joint project of the Friends of the Edgartown Library and the Rotary Club of Martha's Vineyard, with additional grant support by the Martha's Vineyard Savings Bank, has brought lively gatherings into the library for supper and story hours on Wednesdays through November.

This continuing program has room for one or two more families with children up to the age of six. To find out more, please call the library at 508-627-4221.

The Amigos gatherings include stories and songs in two languages -- English and Brazilian Portuguese -- led by a team of high school student mentors and a cultural discussion for parents.
Film Series Concludes

The Library's International Film Series concludes its fall run with a screening at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9. Please note, these programs are for adults; we close the children's room shortly before each film begins and bring a cart full of the best new materials upstairs for our young patrons.

December 9: Volver

Combining magic, humor, sincere emotion and the supernatural in one gaudy package, this film features the beautiful Penelope Cruz at its center. Directed by Pedro Almodovar (2006).

Book Group Meets
The Edgartown Library book group meets on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. to discuss Loving Frank, the novel by Nancy Horan. It tells the story of Mamah Borthwick and her illicit love affair with Frank Lloyd Wright amidst the public shame they experienced in early twentieth century America. By following the artistic aspirations and travels of the two main protagonists, the novel sheds light on the social mores of the times in the U.S. and Europe.

We have copies of this book available at the library desk, and gatherings of the book group are open to all. The book club, led by Director, Jill Dugas Hughes, meets monthly.
Opera Club Meets

The Edgartown Library has started an Opera Club for all those who love (and would like to learn more about) the art of classical singing.

At 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, the club will gather to enjoy a screening of Tosca, Puccini's masterpiece of love, lust and death, filmed live in Rome. This production, starring Placido Domingo, Ruggero Raimondi and, in the title role, Catherine Malfitano, is conducted by Zubin Mehta..

Join us for this special screening and learn about future Opera Club events. All adults are welcome.
December Celebrations and Craft Projects

We hope you can drop in at the library on Saturday, Dec. 13, when we'll be holding our holiday open house as part of the Christmas in Edgartown festivities. We'll have lots of seasonal snacks to share.

Donna Blackburn's Cake of the Month group has proven quite popular, and the decorators' work has been increasingly spectacular. The group meets at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m. -- space is limited, so please call ahead at 508-627-4221 if you're interested.

On Tuesday, Dec. 16, from 4 to 6 p.m., we're holding a holiday crafts workshop for adults -- making  centerpieces for your Christmas table. Bring a few cuttings of evergreen and the library will provide all other materials-- ribbon, branches, ornaments, containers.
December in the Children's Room

This month, story hour programs in the Children's Room are offered every Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m., and Toddler Time programs every Saturday at 10 a.m.

Free drop-in crafts activities are held every Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. this month. We're offering a special craft project on Dec. 13, in conjunction with the Christmas in Edgartown festivities: Kids can drop in from noon to 4 to make ornaments, and we'll be providing all the materials.

Before we close briefly for Christmas, we'll be serving latkes and applesauce at 3 p.m. in the Children's Room on Tuesday, Dec. 23.

On the last week of the year, after we reopen from our Christmas break, the Children's Room will host afternoon crafts projects for children on Saturday, Dec. 27, and again on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 30 & 31.
