July 25-26: Hot Air Balloon Festival
The 7th Annual Citrus Classic Balloon Festival is preparing to light up the summer sky with hot air balloons and great entertainment in Santa Paula on Friday and Saturday. It's a huge event with 8 acres of attractions including a car show, live music, dinner and dancing with fly-bys from historic biplanes, stunts, sky writers, sky divers, and of course, hot air balloons.
New Bus Route to Serve Plum, Whites Canyon  

Beginning August 9, Santa Clarita Transit will launch Route 12, which will travel from the McBean Regional Transit Center to Plum and Whites Canyon. The new service will replace the eastern segment of existing Routes 1 and 2, which currently run from Castaic and Val Verde to Plum and Whites Canyon.

Aug. 2: Harvey Girls Featured in Film 

Starting in the 1880s,  more than 100,000 "Harvey girls" left home and headed west to work as waitresses at Fred Harvey's restaurants along the transcontinental railroad. On Aug. 2, the SCV Historical Society will host a free screening of a new documentary film, "The Harvey Girls: Opportunity Bound," followed by a Q&A session with the filmmaker.

Blast from the Past: Ridge Route Under Construction
Traveling north out of the Santa Clarita Valley was an adventure when the Ridge Route opened in November 1915. You'd load up your Model T or Winton Six with extra cans of water and gasoline and hope for the best. In the 36 miles between Castaic and Gorman, there were 642 curves in the mountaintop highway - adding up to 97 complete circles.
