  EVERY DAY SAINTS

"Being a 'saint' has nothing to do with being special or holy or different. It was, and is, about being faithful-no matter what."

            ~ Edwina Gateley

As a child I believed that saints were a very special type of people. They were the workers of supernatural miracles.  I once believed that to attain sainthood required a divine infusion of extraordinary powers beyond the means of ordinary people.  After almost 30 years as a Pastor, my definition has changed.

You, the beloveds of MCCDC, are among those who have changed my definition of sainthood.

I now believe that saints are those who push beyond limited parking spaces to gather for worship at MCCDC, even when inconvenient.  Saints are those who plant pansies to make our neighborhood more beautiful.  Saints are those who get up early on a Saturday morning to Walk to End HIV.  Saints are those who express gratitude through faithful giving.  Saints are those who make pastoral care phone calls.  Saints are those who share their gifts of dance and song through Worship Arts on Sunday mornings, often at both services.  Saints work behind the scenes to ensure new friends are welcomed to MCCDC, the trash is emptied, the bulletins distributed, and a cup of refreshment is offered.  They plan lessons for our younger saints.  And they prepare a potluck dish for our older saints.

Saints are identified not by a special holy glow, but by dirt under their fingernails.  By tear streaks of compassion.  By a smile that naturally flows from a generous heart.  By prayers at the altar of MCCDC and the altars of hospital tray tables and neighborhood cafes.

Saints get dirty.  And they help others get clean and sober. Saints laugh. They cry.  Saints do something every day to bring more love into the world---and in so doing become every day saints.

In a world of terrorist violence, Ebola, economic uncertainty, corporate greed, natural disaster, exploitation, and political manipulation, we need a simple response:  saints who say "no" to pervasive hopelessness and "yes" to persistent grace.

I praise God for MCCDC where the saints gather and go out to live God's yes in the world.

In my message this Sunday at 9am and 11am I'll look at how our scriptures from Psalm 1 and 1 Thessalonians 2:9-13 describe daily and practical opportunities for sainthood.

This Sunday is All Saints Sunday.  It is a day to remember we are indeed called to ALL be saints!

See you Sunday!

Faithfully,

Rev. Dwayne

MCC STATEMENT

OF FAITH REPORT

The report presents the results of the first round of surveys developed by the Commission on the MCC Statement of Faith. Along with feedback forms on the MCC denominational website, the surveys were launched with the intention of initiating a grass-roots dialogue with the various constituencies of MCC as we begin our task: to review, renew, and update our MCC Statement of Faith as authorized by the 2013 General Conference.

"Taking Church to the Community Conference"

Saturday, November 1, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Wesley Theological Seminary

No longer can we simply ask, "What can we do to get people to come to our church?" We must also consider, "How can we go into the world to encounter those in need of the gospel?" At Taking Church to the Community, you will explore strategies your congregation can use to reach beyond its walls with worship, community events, ministries, and service - meeting community members where they are and moving them toward discipleship.

Taking Church to the Community is ecumenical and designed for both laity and clergy.

Presentations and Workshops

  • The Outside-in Church
  • Go Where the People Are
  • Becoming an Interactive Congregation
  • Blessing Your Community
  • Discipleship 101: Getting Ready
  • Ministries and Community Engagement: Heading Out!
  • Reaching Out through Community Events

If you would like to attend, please contact Rev Cathy Alexander at [email protected] or 202-638-7373.
