Berean Bell 2.0
Worship, Service, Study & Prayer Opportunities
berean baptist church Greetings!

Thank You for taking time out of your busy day to check out Berean's latest newsletter!  As you can see, there are lots of interesting things going on such as a small study group and a new meditative prayer group, and opportunities for service are available to you through supporting Berean's food closet or Burrillville Weekend Snackpack.  We are also beginning to plan another Feed 10,000 event and I hope you will keep watching for more details.  We will need your help finding volunteers, inviting financial support and getting things organized in general!

This Sunday's worship will focus on the story of Joseph the son of Jacob.  Particularly we will be reading about his enslavement in Egypt and the struggles he has there.  The story from Genesis 39 that we will be reading is important for one basic reason.  Joseph believes deep in his heart that he is blessed by God and called to do great things, BUT he is now a slaved, betrayed by his own brothers, harassed by his owners wife, sent to prison.

There is little evidence to support Joseph's belief that he is blessed and that he will have opportunity to be a blessing.
The story of Joseph is meant to do two things.  It is meant to encourage us that God is indeed active in the world and active in our lives, even when we are not realize it, even when times are tough and we struggle.  Second, the story of Joseph teaches us how to remain both expectant and aware of God's call to action in our lives.  It teaches us to dream, when we experience challenges, of the impossible that God makes possible.

I hope you will join us Sunday at 10am to be encouraged, to listen for God's call, to dream a new dream and to see through the impossible, into God's possible!

Blessing

Pastor Darin

Rhode Island State Council of Church
Calls on Congregations to take Special Offering for Food in Liberia in Response to Ebola Crisis

 ~ ~ ~
Friends and Members of Berean.  I received this e-mail from the RISCC this week.
If you are financially able and feel lead to give a gift to this very important ministry information is contained in the e-mail which follows that details how to contribute.

________

The Governing Board of The Rhode State Council of Churches (RISCC) voted today (September 25, 2014) to initiate an effort to raise money for food for Liberia. Rhode Island has one of the largest populations of Liberians in America and these Rhode Islanders are in frequent contact with their family and friends in Liberia. Because of the Ebola crisis, virtually every aspect of daily life has been affected. One of the most urgent needs is for basic food stuffs, such as rice and beans. The Board voted to initiate this action after hearing from Revs. Naomi Smith and Matthew Kai, two Liberian pastors who serve congregations in Providence. They noted that the CDC is forecasting 1.4 million people infected with Ebola in West Africa by January 2015, a conservative prediction, and 700,000+ deaths.

The Council's plan is simple: As money is received by the Council, it will be sent to the Generations for Christ Mission Church in Sinkor, Liberia (a suburb of Monrovia). That church will purchase food stuffs in quantity and distribute the food through other congregations in the area. "We realize that our efforts are limited, but they will make a big difference in the lives of those who receive this food," said the Rev. Betsy Garland, President of the RISCC Governing Board.

The RISCC is calling on congregations to take a special offering on one of the first three weekends in October. Individual gifts will also be welcomed. Checks should be made out to the RISCC with a notation for the Ebola Fund and mailed to RISCC, 100 Niantic Avenue, Suite 101, Providence, RI  02907.

The Rev. Dr. Don Anderson, the RISCC's Executive Minister, stated that "this is only one of many efforts to bring aid and support to the people of affected areas. Our effort is intended to utilize grassroots connections to get food into the hands of hungry people in the shortest possible time. We expect to have food being distributed by mid-October at the latest."
